Band 3 Senior Pharmacy Support Worker - HMP Birmingham

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our friendly department for an enthusiastic and motivated Senior Pharmacy Support Worker to join our strong team, delivering a high-quality service to our patients.

It is essential that you have or are working towards or willing to work towards NVQ L2.

Join us and you will gain experience in a secure environment dispensary; carrying out various duties which are essential for the smooth running of the department. These duties include undertaking general dispensary duties; maintaining good stock levels in the Pharmacy; participating in ward top-up services, counselling patients on medication and acting as an authorised witness (2nd check) for administration of controlled drug medications.

Main duties of the job
  • To facilitate continuity of care, ensuring efficient medicines management service, effective stock control of medicines within the prison and following appropriate training and competency assessment; carry out specific tasks delegated by registered technicians and/or pharmacists.
  • Support wider healthcare to deliver wing-based services, including being an authorised witness in the administration of controlled medication (2nd check).
  • To facilitate timely delivery of medication to wing locations multiple times per day.
  • To report and communicate effectively with the Pharmacy team.
  • All work will be undertaken under the indirect supervision of a qualified pharmacy technician or pharmacist.
  • To develop and maintain communication with patients, prison staff and other healthcare professionals, at an appropriate level, ensuring confidentiality and dignity is maintained at all times.
  • To attend team meetings, read team and organisation communications and attend education/training sessions.
  • To give appropriate information and support to patients regarding medication.
  • Assemble prescription medication when required under direct supervision of a qualified pharmacy technician or pharmacist.
  • Re-stock dispensary shelves and replace items at the end of the day observing expiry dates and the correct rotation of stock.
  • To support adherence to prison formulary, promoting cost effective use of medicines.
