Overview

Are you looking to progress your Underwriting career with a people-focused business? Help us provide outstanding underwriting service to our brokers across the UK, dealing with Professional & Management Risk policies here at Markel.

The opportunity to join Markel is an exciting one as our business grows. We have moved into brand-new innovative offices in Leeds city centre, right next to the train station, and we currently have a new opportunity for an Assistant Underwriter to join our Renewal Connect team; (3 days in the office / 2 days from home). This opportunity is based within the renewals department as part of a smaller renewals team, dealing with a wide variety of Professional and Management Risks and Charity policies. You will work alongside other departments to build and maintain relationships and deliver exceptional service to our brokers.

The role of the Assistant Underwriter is to work as part of the Renewal Connect team, providing an excellent underwriting service for brokers in the UK. You will develop and maintain good relationships internally and externally, monitor and analyse broker activity to identify success and areas for improvement, and provide proactive feedback to the team manager. You will have responsibility for renewals and mid-term queries with a desire to be visible to our brokers.

What you’ll be doing
  • Provide and maintain a high level of underwriting, demonstrating knowledge of company guidelines and authority levels to achieve defined objectives.
  • Underwrite risks within your personal authority.
  • Provide excellent service to our brokers, prioritising renewals and mid-term adjustments and referrals via the broker e-trading platform, Acturis, or by email/phone to meet deadlines.
  • Ensure incoming calls to the team are answered promptly and professionally.
  • Diarise and follow up renewals with brokers to secure and retain business.
  • Review broker activity, highlight product benefits, negotiate terms, and report findings to the team manager.
  • Manage renewal cases with the broker to secure renewal and upsell/cross-sell additional covers.
  • Build and maintain excellent working relationships with the technical teams in Leeds and the wider business.
  • Assist the team and wider business with ad hoc projects.
Our must haves
  • Proven relevant insurance experience and demonstrable technical skills.
  • Background and experience in our classes of business is desirable but not essential.
  • Excellent written, spoken communication and numerical skills.
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrable IT skills including MS Office.
  • Be studying for or willing to study for CII qualifications – the company will fully fund and support this qualification.
