Assistant Farm Manager – Poultry

Job Description

To support the Farm Manager in the daily operational management of the poultry unit, ensuring high standards of bird welfare, biosecurity, productivity, and farm maintenance. The Assistant Farm Manager will oversee staff, support flock health and performance, and help ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. This role has the potential for progression to Farm Manager.

Key Responsibilities
Bird Welfare & Husbandry
  • Oversee daily care of poultry, ensuring optimal welfare at all times.
  • Monitor flock health: identifying illness, behavioural changes, or environmental concerns.
  • Assist with vaccinations, feed changes, routine checks, and humane handling procedures.
Farm Operations
  • Support daily farm routines, including feeding, lighting, ventilation, litter management, and water systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of flock performance (mortality, feed intake, weight, egg production if layers).
  • Assist with the coordination of catching teams, deliveries, and farm schedules.
Health, Safety & Biosecurity
  • Enforce strict biosecurity protocols across all areas of the farm.
  • Ensure all staff follow health and safety procedures.
  • Participate in audits and contribute to continuous improvement.
Team Leadership
  • Supervise farm staff in the absence of the Farm Manager.
  • Train new staff on animal welfare, equipment handling, and standard operating procedures.
  • Organise daily task lists and ensure tasks are completed to a high standard.
Maintenance & Equipment
  • Support basic maintenance of farm buildings, equipment, feeders, and drinkers.
  • Report faults promptly and coordinate repair work as instructed.
  • Ensure machinery and equipment are operated safely.
Data & Reporting
  • Assist in maintaining all production, welfare, and compliance records.
  • Prepare and submit reports to the Farm Manager as needed.
  • Monitor inventory of feed, bedding, PPE, and consumables.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
  • Experience working in poultry farming (broilers, layers, or breeders).
  • Strong understanding of poultry husbandry and welfare practices.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and early mornings.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Competence with record-keeping (digital or paper-based).
Desirable
  • Vocational or degree-level qualification in agriculture, animal science, or related field.
  • Experience supervising farm staff.
  • Knowledge of farm machinery operation and basic maintenance skills.
  • Familiarity with assurance schemes (e.g., Red Tractor, RSPCA Assured).
  • Valid driving licence and access to transport.
