Approved Premises Manager

An exciting opportunity to support high‑risk individuals through effective rehabilitation, safeguarding, risk management and multi‑agency collaboration within a specialist criminal justice environment.

Qualifications include Probation Officer, Service Manager, Criminal Justice Practitioner, Safeguarding Lead, Social Worker, Probation Manager, Residential Services Manager, Criminal Justice Services Manager.

Salary: circa £45,000 per annum.

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England.

Occasional travel across the local area and nationally may be required, but will use remote technology when possible.

Job type: Full‑time, permanent. Working hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. On‑call rota required; work outside normal hours occasionally.

Job Overview

We have a new role for an Approved Premises Manager with a Diploma in Probation Studies or Level 3 Diploma in Probation Practice or equivalent, or a registered Social Worker (BA (hons), MA/MSc in Social Work). The organisation operates two Independent Approved Premises in Newcastle, providing 46 beds and delivering enhanced supervision for high‑risk individuals.

As Manager you will oversee risk management, lead practice quality, staff development and continuous improvement, and work closely with partner agencies to enhance public protection.

Duties
  • Operational Management: Lead daily operations to ensure a safe and effective residential service.
  • Staff Development: Support training, coaching and professional development for the team.
  • Risk and Safeguarding: Embed robust safeguarding and expert risk management practice.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong relationships with partner agencies to support public protection.
  • Leadership and Oversight: Provide clear leadership, direction and accountability across the service.
  • Policy and Practice: Drive quality improvement through policy review and practice development.
Candidate Requirements
Essential
  • Diploma in Probation Studies or Level 3 Diploma in Probation Practice or equivalent OR Social Work qualification BA (hons), MA/MSc in Social Work.
  • Good working knowledge of the Probation Service / Criminal Justice Sector.
  • Experience of multi‑agency working.
  • Knowledge of Enabling Environments.
  • Experience delivering activities to develop practice quality with individuals who have multiple complex needs.
  • Understanding of diversity, equalities and inclusive practice.
  • Experience of coaching and developing individuals and teams to create an inclusive enabling environment.
  • Experience managing risk and safeguarding.
  • Experience and knowledge of desistance and trauma‑informed approaches to achieving positive change and reducing reoffending.
Desirable
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence, negotiate and motivate staff.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to manage time, plan effectively and prioritise competing demands to meet deadlines and organisational objectives.
  • Proficient in using IT and information systems to manage data effectively.
  • Ability to develop and promote new ideas, and provide feedback diplomatically and sensitively.
  • Skilled in facilitating workshops and practice discussions.

This role is subject to an Enhanced DBS check with the additional barred list check.
