British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for an ANALYTICAL SCIENTIST I – MATERNITY COVER (FIXED TERM ROLE) in Southampton

What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?

The role will focus on advancing GC×GC data processing workflows, leveraging artificial intelligence and software-assisted compound identification to enhance non-targeted GC screening methodologies and analytical throughput. A key aspect of the role will be the development and integration of a robust MS library build to support high-quality and reliable compound identification. This includes curating and validating spectral data, optimizing matching algorithms, and ensuring consistency across analytical platforms to improve confidence in non-targeted analysis outcomes.

What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?

The role will assist in the assessment of BAT products and technologies, delivering innovations to market.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Support for analytical testing and advancing GC×GC data processing workflows
  • Build of in-house mass spectral database for compound identification
  • Drafting Study Plans, Standard Operating Procedures, and Reports
  • Lead interactions with peers in the identification of analytical requirements at project level
  • Keep stakeholders informed of progress through formal and informal communication
  • Promote and apply compliance with quality systems and requirements to ensure robust analytical processes
  • Select appropriate means to address new analytical challenges

What are we looking for?

Experience Required

  • Expertise in GC×GC data processing and non-targeted GC screening including the use of AI-driven algorithms and modern software platforms for compound identification
  • Relevant technical experience and knowledge of analytical method development, optimization and validation using complex instrumental analysis techniques (GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, GC×GC-TOFMS)
  • Familiarity with non-targeted screening workflows and compound identification strategies
  • Good analytical knowledge for the detection and quantification of a range of active substances found in consumer products

Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required

  • Use of statistics in GC data processing
  • Knowledge of AI-assisted and other analytical tools for compound identification
  • Good attention to detail with a keen problem-solving attitude
  • Creative, flexible, receptive to change, focused and able to deliver

Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required

  • Professional/academic achievement in Analytical Chemistry, Chemometrics, Data Science with focus on chemical applications up to 1st degree level or equivalent
  • Active membership of the RSC and/or evidence of pro-active continuing professional development

BENEFICIAL

  • Competency in the chemical analysis of natural extracts and related products
  • Familiarity with GC×GC software such as ChromSpace, ChromCompare+, GC Image, ChromaTOF, etc.
  • Experience of working in an ISO accredited and/or GxP compliant laboratory
  • Experience with Python data analysis, programming, and modelling
  • Experience in building or curating custom MS libraries
