Job description
Overview

The shift pattern for this post is Monday‑Friday, 37 hours per week. You need to have a live NMC UK pin in order to be considered for this post.

The Day Surgery Unit (DSU) in New Victoria Hospital (NVH) requires an Anaesthetic Practitioner (AP) who must be either an Operating Department Assistant (ODP) or a Registered General Nurse (RGN) who has completed the NHS Education for Scotland (NES) Core Competencies for Anaesthetic Assistants Portfolio.

Responsibilities
  • Provide skilled anaesthetic assistance to our anaesthetists across a variety of specialties including orthopaedics, urology, ENT, ophthalmology, maxilla‑facial, gynaecology, and pain service.
  • Care for postoperative patients in the Post‑Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) and participate in the resuscitation rota for NVH.
  • Compile staff rotas, input SSTS data, review TURAS and Datix submissions, and participate in departmental audits to implement theatre processes.
  • Order stock for clinical procedures via PERCOS, maintain medication stock levels, and organise servicing of anaesthetic equipment.
  • Deliver expert knowledge across a wide range of theatre specialties, contribute to teaching and training, and encourage ongoing staff development using evidence‑based research to underpin clinical decisions.
  • Maintain excellent communication skills to receive and disseminate information between staff, management, other departments and members of the multidisciplinary team while complying with GDPR legislation.
Qualifications
  • Either an ODP or RGN with NES Core Competencies for Anaesthetic Assistants Portfolio.
  • Live NMC UK pin and evidence of current NMC/HCPC registration prior to the start date.
  • Current PVG Scheme membership and Disclosure Scotland Check.
  • Immediate Life Support (ILS) certificate is advantageous; training can be provided.
Other Requirements

Dual training may be required in the future. The role requires the successful candidate to care for patients with increasingly complex needs in line with the British Association of Days Surgery (BADS) recommendations.

The post holder will be expected to engage in multi‑site working within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to meet service needs.

Effective 1 April 2026, the full‑time working hours for all Agenda for Change posts will be reduced to 36 hours.
