Your Role

As an AI Scientist, you will carry out applied research on novel AI‑based solutions for automated analysis of medical images and other types of data relevant to healthcare. You will work within the AI Research Team to support the science and innovation that will underpin next generation products using deep learning, computer vision, mathematical, statistical and machine learning methods. You will draw on your technical and scientific expertise to keep the company at the forefront of ground‑breaking research.

In this role, you will focus on designing, implementing and evaluating an LLM driven multi‑agent pipeline that orchestrates clinical guidelines, third‑party tools, in‑house models, and local analytics to automatically analyse echocardiographic studies, produce structured clinical reports, and support interactive clinician review/clarification.

Your Responsibilities
  • Independently lead, and carry out research to characterise and address problems related to echocardiography image analysis, and deliver it in a timely manner.
  • Develop new algorithms and computational tools for AI‑enabled computational medical image analysis involving image quantification, disease detection, etc.
  • Document research findings, experiments, and results clearly and concisely.
  • Write up research papers for the purposes of publication, and abstracts to present at international conferences.
  • Ensure you keep up to date with the latest advances in AI, deep learning and medical imaging and utilise these new techniques in your research.
  • Work closely with clinical scientists, AI engineers and other teams.
  • Work with internal engineering teams to help transfer research outputs and code as art of the process of commercialisation.
  • Review research code created by other team members.
  • Review documents, designs, and colleagues code and providing constructive feedback.
  • Follow good information governance practice throughout this job role and ensure compliance with Ultromics information security and data protection policies in all applicable assigned tasks.

Requirements: Your Skills And Experience
  • Doctorate in Machine Learning, Image analysis, AI, computer science or other mathematical/scientific background, or equivalent research experience.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, and in the use of technical and scientific libraries such as PyTorch, scikit‑learn, Pandas, etc.
  • Experience with software development tools (such as git).
  • Strong presentation, writing and communication skills.
  • Analytical skills - ability to structure and process qualitative or quantitative data and draw insightful conclusions from it.
  • Creative, innovative- generates new and innovative solutions to problems.
  • Works effectively with others, contributes strongly, recognises the value of differing contributions, supportive and collaborative.
  • Strong background in deep learning for vision and / or language: transformers, multimodal architectures, sequence/video models.
  • Good understanding and practical experience with large language models (LLMs), agentic AI, prompt engineering and tool calling patterns.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and passion to apply innovative ideas to solve real‑world problems.
  • Strong research track record in the field.
  • Adaptability / flexibility - adjusts quickly to changing priorities and conditions.
Your Desired Skills and Experience
  • Background in medical imaging.
  • Hands on experience building multi agent systems or agent frameworks that orchestrate tool calls and reasoning.
  • Experience with vision language foundation models and video to text summarisation for clinical use cases.
  • Prior publications in medical imaging, multimodal LLMs, or agentic AI.
  • A good understanding of risks involved in use of sensitive information in AI.
  • Experience with project management tools (Jira, Confluence, etc).
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure for training and deployment of AI models.
  • Experience in a venture capital-backed start‑up or scale‑up environment.
