Overview
Our client is a rapidly growing business designing innovative applications for the marine industry. We are seeking a meticulous Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join the engineering team on permanent basis.
Salary: £55,000 - £65,000 per annum. Location: United Kingdom. Clearability requirement: BPSS clearance and right to work in the UK.
Responsibilities
- Accountability for full systems from inception to delivery; drive function, quality, and performance.
- Conduct detailed analysis of design requirements, specifications, and project objectives to develop innovative mechanical design solutions.
- Utilise CAD software and other design tools to create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models of mechanical components, ensuring accuracy, functionality, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Substantiate designs using analytical methods, FEA software, and other simulation tools to validate integrity, performance, and safety in the maritime environment.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (electrical engineers, naval architects, control systems engineers) to ensure seamless integration of mechanical designs with other system elements.
- Conduct material selection and evaluation considering mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, weight optimization, and cost-effectiveness.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation including design specifications, engineering drawings, and technical reports.
- Commit to learning fast through prototypes, simulations, and other testing and validation activities.
Qualifications and Experience
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify, analyse, and resolve complex design challenges.
- Courageous and innovative mindset; willing to challenge conventional thinking and propose novel ideas.
- Proficiency in sketching and the ability to communicate design concepts visually.
- Expertise in 3D modelling software (e.g., Inventor, SolidWorks).
- Solid grounding in mechanical engineering principles and manufacturing processes relevant to maritime technology.
- Strong knowledge of material selection for marine environments, including corrosion mitigation technologies.
- Ability to justify designs through market research, hand calculations, simulation, and physical testing.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry standards for marine systems; experience designing for class approval (Lloyd's or DNV-GL) is beneficial.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and present proposals.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to create accurate technical drawings and models.
- Experience with prototyping, testing, and iterative design processes.
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; advanced degrees or certifications are a plus.
- Experience with pneumatic systems and complex mechanical linkages; experience with marine or mobile robotics projects is desirable.
