Job description
Overview

Our client is a rapidly growing business designing innovative applications for the marine industry. We are seeking a meticulous Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join the engineering team on permanent basis.

Salary: £55,000 - £65,000 per annum. Location: United Kingdom. Clearability requirement: BPSS clearance and right to work in the UK.

Responsibilities
  • Accountability for full systems from inception to delivery; drive function, quality, and performance.
  • Conduct detailed analysis of design requirements, specifications, and project objectives to develop innovative mechanical design solutions.
  • Utilise CAD software and other design tools to create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models of mechanical components, ensuring accuracy, functionality, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Substantiate designs using analytical methods, FEA software, and other simulation tools to validate integrity, performance, and safety in the maritime environment.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (electrical engineers, naval architects, control systems engineers) to ensure seamless integration of mechanical designs with other system elements.
  • Conduct material selection and evaluation considering mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, weight optimization, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation including design specifications, engineering drawings, and technical reports.
  • Commit to learning fast through prototypes, simulations, and other testing and validation activities.
Qualifications and Experience

  • Solid grounding in mechanical engineering principles and manufacturing processes relevant to maritime technology.
  • Strong knowledge of material selection for marine environments, including corrosion mitigation technologies.
  • Ability to justify designs through market research, hand calculations, simulation, and physical testing.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry standards for marine systems; experience designing for class approval (Lloyd's or DNV-GL) is beneficial.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and present proposals.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to create accurate technical drawings and models.
  • Experience with prototyping, testing, and iterative design processes.
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; advanced degrees or certifications are a plus.
  • Experience with pneumatic systems and complex mechanical linkages; experience with marine or mobile robotics projects is desirable.
