A leading mobility solutions provider in Valenciennes seeks an experienced R&D Engineer to innovate and optimize lighting and signage for railway vehicles. Candidates should have at least 3 years in R&D and be proficient with design tools like Ansys and Python. Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience in R&D or product development of photonics/electronics products.
  • Familiarity with optical/mechanical design tools.
  • Proven R&D project management experience.
  • Experience in railway, aeronautics, or automotive sectors preferred.

You will join our Interiors Component Development Site and Product Family of Valenciennes Petite Forêt, a key actor in the design and development of interior train parts as well as front ends, with more than 180 people & 22 different nationalities, mechanical engineers & designers, buyers, industrial & quality engineers, project managers & product experts, R&D engineers, working both for French & International projects.

What are my responsibilities?
Purpose of the Job/Objective
  • In charge of developing / qualifying new lighting & signage interior and exterior solutions (functional & ambiance interior lighting, front-end lighting, lighting signatures, dynamic signage elements, etc.) securing a differentiating advantage for Alstom Rolling Stock business, and providing passengers with optimal lighting comfort and guidance during their public transport journey.
  • In charge of supporting the introduction of newly qualified solutions onto Alstom commercial projects
  • In charge of identifying new lighting & signage technologies with promising benefits and monitoring their technological & maturity level

  • KPI R&D Projects (OTIF, Design Review on time, budget adherence)
  • KPI Innovation generation & exploitation (number inventions, use on commercial projects)
  • Technical support to Tenders & Projects (quality, time)
Your responsibilities include:
  • Executes and manages research and product development projects (internal + at suppliers) related to Interiors/Exteriors lighting & signage applications for implementation into railway vehicles
  • Performs/contributes to in depth design studies (optical/electronic/mechanical), proposes architectures, material choices, designs that optimize performances, reliability, cost, manufacturability, environmental impact, etc.
  • Analyzes the market and competition (industrial watch, scientific & technological watch) in relation to lighting & signage technologies (optics, electronics, materials, etc.) & products, and associated use cases
  • Suggests innovative solutions and R&D partnerships opportunities in line with Alstom’s development strategy, and taking into account customer’s needs and requirements.
  • Ensures applicability of the developed products onto commercial projects through close collaboration with the Marketing, Tender & Project teams (Engineering, Costing, Sourcing, Quality, etc.)
  • Contributes to internal budget collection for R&D activities and manages reporting to internal customers
  • Develops the network of internal and external R&D partners for innovation in relation to lighting, signage and electronics equipment.
What do I need to qualify for this job?
  • At least 3yrs experience in R&D / product development of photonics/electronics products in an industrial, preferably international, context
  • At ease with optical/mechanical simulation & design tools (e.g. Ansys, SPEOS, CATIA) and programming (e.g. Matlab/Python)
  • Proven R&D project management experience in an industrial environment
  • Experience in railway, aeronautics or automotive, and or related standards, is a plus

  • Intrinsic passion for eco-design related topics (recyclability, renewable materials, circular economy, etc.) and able to act as ambassador internally & externally
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills
  • Ability to work in an international environment; Speak and write in English; French is a bonus.
Travels :
  • Travels: suppliers and R&D partners visits. <15% of the time
