MISSION PRINCIPALE
ACTIVITES PRINCIPALES
HéLiCéO “Héritages Linguistiques, Cultures orales, Éducation en Océanie” https://heliceo.huma-num.fr is a CNRS scholarly consortium planned for several years (2025–2030) and currently funded for the first 12 months. It aims to document and describe the languages of Oceania, analyze them within the framework of general linguistics, and promote their inclusion in society. HéLiCéO plans to create several scientific databases and online resources intended for different audiences.
In this context, HéLiCéO is recruiting a Computer engineer (M/F) for a one-year contract. If the project's funding is confirmed beyond the first year, the contract can be renewed annually. This position will be attached to two strands of HéLiCéO project: #2 “Historical and comparative linguistics”, and #3 “Oral heritage and mythology”.
The HéLiCéO project includes three hubs: Tahiti, Paris, and Montrouge; the position will be based in Montrouge, near Paris. The Montrouge hub will include between 4 and 9 people, depending on the period. This team is part of Lattice (Langues, Textes, Traitements informatiques, Cognition), a lively CNRS–ENS research department dedicated to research in linguistics (lexicon, grammar, discourse), language modeling, NLP, and artificial intelligence. The Montrouge team of HéLiCéO is coordinated by Alexandre François, a linguist specializing in the typology of language change and in the analysis of Pacific languages. Besides his supervision, the recruited Engineer will also work under the guidance of Konstantin Henke (the computational engineer already working for HéLiCéO) and Mathieu Dehouck (a linguist specializing in NLP) — as well as with the other partners of the HéLiCéO project.
We will only consider applications that include a CV and a letter of motivation.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
The engineer’s mission will be to develop and maintain digital resources dedicated to language and cultural comparison, within the HéLiCéO project, in cooperation with the existing engineer. These resources include existing databases (EvoSem and EvoLex, on semantic change), databases yet to be created (e.g., on grammatical structures, comparative mythology), as well as public sites for a broader audience.
Additionally, the engineer will assist researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and PhD students of the HéLiCéO project in managing their digital data: text corpora, lexical data, grammatical data.
Finally, the recruited Engineer will be responsible for developing the Data Management Plan (Plan de gestion des données, PGD) for the entire HéLiCéO project, aiming to secure digital data over the long term, and ensure their sustainability.
