An academic research institution in Saclay is seeking a PhD candidate to focus on the Higgs boson physics, specifically researching the Zγ decay channel. The role involves conducting analysis, developing electronics for optimizing time resolution, and leveraging modern analysis tools with C++. Candidates should possess a strong background in experimental physics, programming skills in C++, and familiarity with machine learning techniques.
Overview
This thesis focuses on the Higgs boson physics, specifically the rare and not yet observed decay channel Zγ. The analysis aims to observe this decay with a statistical significance exceeding three standard deviations using LHC Run 2 and Run 3 data.
Experimental Work
The work includes an instrumental part to optimize the time resolution of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL). A new readout electronics is being developed to achieve a timing resolution of 30 ps for high‑energy photons and electrons. Algorithms will be developed to maintain this performance within CMS during the high‑luminosity phase of the LHC.
Analysis Tools
Simple, robust and efficient analysis tools written in modern C++ and leveraging the ROOT framework allow contribution to every stage of the analysis, from raw data to published results. The CMS Saclay group has deep expertise in Higgs physics, electron and photon reconstruction, detector simulation and machine learning techniques.
Travel and Collaboration
Regular trips to CERN are proposed to present the thesis results to the CMS collaboration and to participate in laboratory tests and installation of the new ECAL electronics.
