Overview

Associate) Banking and Finance Lawyer - Southern Central Europe – based in Luxembourg. This is a full-time temporary position at grade 4 / 5 in the European Investment Bank (EIB) Legal Directorate, EU Operations Department, Central Europe Division, Southern and Central Europe Unit (SCE).

This position is based at our Luxembourg headquarters and requires regular office presence. relocation support is offered.

Panel interviews are anticipated for October 2025.

Purpose

The Southern and Central Europe (SCE) Unit provides legal advice to the EIB in various lending operations and works with member states, municipalities, banks, and corporate counterparties. The unit covers secured and non-secured lending, structured finance and asset finance, across seven countries: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Croatia.

Operating Network

Report to the Head of Unit and collaborate with in-house lawyers in the SCE Unit and Legal Directorate, as well as colleagues from Origination, Portfolio Management and Monitoring and Projects Directorates, and external counsels, borrowers, and guarantors as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Draft and negotiate legal documentation for financing operations and guarantees in the SCE jurisdictions, including bilateral loans, banking/corporate/public sector transactions, and security documents.
  • Structure and negotiate structured finance (including securitisations) and risk-sharing operations, with or without external counsel.
  • Provide legal advice on all matters related to the EIB’s lending operations (pre- and post-financial close), including structuring transactions, negotiation, and legal monitoring (e.g., loan restructuring).
  • Manage contacts and negotiations with clients and their legal counsels; handle administrative formalities with clients having legal implications.
  • Liaise with external counsel when necessary and share knowledge with less experienced colleagues.
  • Stay up-to-date with legal developments and contribute to research on matters arising from the Bank’s operations.
  • Build and maintain relationships within the Bank, with clients, and with external legal advisers.
Qualifications
  • University degree in Law (Bachelor level or equivalent; Master preferred).
  • Professional legal qualification and/or experience in the SCE operation jurisdictions is advantageous.
  • Minimum 3 years, ideally up to 10 years, of relevant experience in banking or project financing, advising on lending transactions (preferably at an international law firm or in-house in a banking/financial institution).
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating finance documents in English.
  • Excellent English proficiency; knowledge of French is an advantage; knowledge of other local languages is a plus.
