Jobbeschreibung
Research Assistant (PhD) position (m/f/d) in the field of polymer coatings for highly conformable neural implants

The Soft Sensorics & Biohybrid Systems group within the research center BrainLinks-BrainTools of the University of Freiburg offers a PhD position to develop and test ultra‑thin polymer coatings for highly conformable neural implants (NeuralaceTM). The position begins March 1, 2026 (or at earliest convenience) and lasts three years (75% FTE).

Who We Are

The research center BrainLinks-BrainTools unites life sciences, engineering and clinical applications to advance brain‑machine interface technology. Dedicated to flexible yet stable interfaces, the center brings together neuroscience, materials science and engineering to deliver novel interdisciplinary results.

Your Tasks
  • Test diverse coating processes (transfer coating, dip coating, etc.) to produce ultra‑thin hydrogel‑based polymer layers on NeuralaceTM neural implants.
  • Characterise coated implant structures: mechanical (bend, adhesion tests), electrical (impedance spectroscopy) and biocompatibility properties.
  • Perform organotypic brain slice testing and subsequent immunohistological examination.
  • Present findings at international conferences and publish in scientific journals.
  • Collaborate closely with University of Utah, Blackrock Neurotech Inc. and Sentiomed Inc.; maintain professional conduct, meet milestones and report progress regularly.
Requirements
  • Master’s or equivalent in Chemistry, Materials Science or related field.
  • Extensive experience in polymer synthesis and surface modification, including silanization.
  • Proficiency in thin‑layer characterization and surface analysis techniques (XPS, FIB‑SEM, FTIR) and mechanical/electrical testing.
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary research, creativity, proactivity and teamwork.
  • High proficiency in English (written and spoken).
What We Offer

A highly interdisciplinary research environment in a modern office and laboratory setting at the IMBIT building. Access to state‑of‑the‑art technology and equipment, a graduate programme for further education, networking with doctoral students, and opportunities for career development. The position supports the completion of a PhD.

Application Documents
  • Cover letter expressing motivation.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Complete transcripts and grade reports for bachelor’s and master’s studies.
  • Additional certificates (e.g., good conduct, internship proofs).
  • Two references who can assess your work ethic.
Deadline

Reference number 00004769. Apply by 31 January 2026. Position expires on 28 February 2029.
