Crystal Kids was founded in 1992 and has been a registered charity with CRA since April 1993. Located in the Edmonton inner‑city, serving hundreds of at‑risk and disadvantaged children. The significant majority of whom are Indigenous youth. Through relational care, trauma‑informed care, and harm reduction our best practice service delivery model provides critical mentoring, literacy interventions, life skills competencies, and wellness support. We also provide nutritional support and food security, which are the most pressing needs of our children. We are engaged in wellness support by assisting and mentoring youth navigating life with extensive history of generational poverty, physical and mental health challenges, and the resulting and layered trauma of complex and significant prolonged adversity. We mentor and support youth in building capacity through their marginalized lived experience. This below‑poverty‑line reality includes: hunger, absence of healthy adult modelling / supervision, instability at home and family violence, homelessness in all its manifestations (couch surfing, lack of permanent address / transience / living on the street without a housing structure / living in tent cities / homeless shelter surfing etc, disassociation from school / academics, LGBTQ+ advocacy, justice / legal matters, racism and bullying, sexual health issues, human trafficking, off‑reserve cultural identity gaps for Indigenous families, lack of supports and resources for newcomer families, the lure of drugs and alcohol as a means of self‑medicating, and other methods of survival for our street‑entrenched youth.
