Position overview
Position title:
Community Studies Program Pre-six Lecturer

Salary range:
A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a standard five-credit course is $8,531 -$11,131 (based on salary points 1-10). Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year.


Percent time:
Variable, based on the course load assigned.


Anticipated start:
Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit's instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments made in fall quarter 2024 through fall quarter 2025. Initial appointments with effective dates outside of this recruitment period will require an alternative open recruitment.


Position duration:
Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position description

The Community Studies Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach topical and core curriculum courses. We seek applications from outstanding candidates to offer primarily upper division instruction in one or more of the following topical areas:



  • Community organizing

  • Social movements

  • Experiential education theory and practice

  • Non-profit organization studies

  • Health justice

  • Health policy analysis, advocacy and activism

  • Critical public health

  • Community research methods

  • Urban studies

  • Urban and regional political economy

  • Local and global food systems and movements

  • Labor and global political economy

  • Ethnography

  • Anthropology, cultural

  • Anthropology, general

  • Politics


The selected candidates' instruction will draw upon their professional expertise and content knowledge associated with relevant social science and humanities disciplines. We are particularly interested in applicants with a demonstrated record of successful teaching at the college or research university level or professional work experience demonstrating teaching proficiency (e.g., organizing or facilitating workshops, seminars, and/or trainings).


The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their teaching and other assigned duties.


The hiring unit will not sponsor employment-eligible immigration statuses for this position.

Master's degree or higher (or equivalent foreign degree) or a Bachelor's degree and two years' professional experience in a field relevant to the advertised topical areas.
