Duties
The Water, Fuel & Environment Technician is responsible for inspection, maintenance, repair, and installation of water, fuel and environmental systems at Department of National Defence facilities. Duties include:
- Inspecting potable water systems, sewage and stormwater infrastructure, petroleum storage and distribution systems.
- Conducting routine testing and operating computerized control systems, ensuring compliance with federal, provincial and municipal regulations.
- Responding to hazardous material incidents, overseeing contractor work, maintaining safety equipment, and supporting environmental investigations.
- Performing mechanical maintenance of pumps, compressors/blowers, motorized valves, SCADA and process analyzers.
All tasks may require physical demand, work in hazardous conditions and varying environments.
Work Environment
The role is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, working as part of the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces. Operations support the mission to defend Canada and contribute to international peace and security.
Essential Qualifications
- Education: Level 1 certification in Water or Wastewater Treatment recognized by the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change or equivalent provincial certification (e.g., Canadian Armed Forces Trade Qualification Level 5 as a Water Fuel Environment Technician).
- Experience: Experience in operation, maintenance, inspection and repair of water or wastewater systems and associated equipment (pumps, compressors, motorized valves, SCADA, process analyzers).
- Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, engineering drawings and process flow diagrams.
- English language essential.
Asset Qualifications (may be considered essential)
- Petroleum Mechanic Certification.
- Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change Class 2 Petroleum Storage Tank (PST) Certification.
- American Petroleum Institute (API) Above Ground Storage Tank Inspector Certification.
- Level II certification in Water or Wastewater Treatment or Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection.
- Certified Pool Operators Course or experience with aquatic recreation facilities.
- Experience in confined space entries.
- Experience in Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Spill Response.
- Experience with petroleum storage systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Operational Requirements
- Will work overtime and respond to emergency call‑outs after normal hours.
- Will work in adverse weather conditions.
- Will travel to different work sites within unit area.
- Will attend all required training.
- Will stand, climb, walk, lift, bend, pull, push, reach and crouch in hot and cold environments, sometimes at heights.
- Will obtain First Aid certification.
- Will obtain Level II Water and Wastewater Treatment certification within one year.
Conditions of Employment
- Possession of valid, unrestricted provincial driver’s licence.
- Willingness to travel occasionally.
- Willingness to obtain and maintain a DND 404 driver’s licence.
- Work may require lifting up to 25 kg, climbing ladders, working from heights and in confined spaces.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as SCBA, with fit testing every 3 years.
- Availability for overtime and on‑standby during off‑duty hours.
- Strict adherence to DND and Canadian Forces Code of Values and Ethics, Conflict of Interest policies, and DOD 7021‑1.
