Qualifications

  • Minimum of 15 years of post-qualification experience in corporate insurance or financial services law in Canada, in good standing.
  • Master's preferred in a related discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the legal department, overseeing staff performance and development.
  • Provide research, legal analysis, and guidance on legal and compliance issues.
  • Collaborate with business units to resolve legal issues and develop solutions.
  • Draft and review contracts, assist with negotiations, and develop policy wording.
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments, advising management accordingly.
  • Manage relations with government and regulatory agencies.
  • Supervise external counsel handling litigation and disputes, managing legal expenses.
  • Implement and manage policies to ensure compliance with insurance laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate with global teams to improve operational effectiveness.
  • Act as Compliance Officer and Privacy Officer for the Canadian Branch.
  • Serve as Assistant Corporate Secretary, ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Represent Canada on the Group ERM Committee and execute ERM policies.

Officer Position: Legal Counsel

The Legal Counsel will provide legal and regulatory support to CNA’s Canadian operations as the sole regional counsel. This role involves managing and delivering a broad range of legal and regulatory advice to align policies with the company’s strategic plans.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the legal department, overseeing staff performance and development.
  • Provide research, legal analysis, and guidance on legal and compliance issues.
  • Collaborate with business units to resolve legal issues and develop solutions.
  • Draft and review contracts, assist with negotiations, and develop policy wording.
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments, advising management accordingly.
  • Manage relations with government and regulatory agencies, including liaising with OSFI and overseeing the preparation of ORSA.
  • Supervise external counsel handling litigation and disputes, managing legal expenses.
  • Implement and manage policies to ensure compliance with insurance laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate with global teams to align policies and improve operational effectiveness.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives involving people, processes, and technology.
  • Act as Compliance Officer and Privacy Officer for the Canadian Branch.
  • Serve as Assistant Corporate Secretary, ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Represent Canada on the Group ERM Committee and execute ERM policies and frameworks.

Reporting Line: SVP, Chief Financial Officer Canada

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience in the Canadian insurance industry and familiarity with OSFI regulations.
  • Experience with policy wording review and product development is advantageous.
  • Ability to manage a diverse workload and work in a multi-jurisdictional environment.
  • Strategic mindset with strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related software.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred in a related discipline.
  • J.D. or Bachelor of Civil Law, depending on province.
  • Minimum of 15 years of post-qualification experience in corporate insurance or financial services law in Canada, in good standing.
