Job description
Overview

The Heather Cutler Foundation is a federally incorporated non-profit organization based in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador. Founded by Heather’s family after experiencing challenges navigating pancreatic cancer care, the Foundation is driven by real change rather than bureaucracy. Leadership includes advocates and professionals with deep ties to the community and a passion for healthcare reform.

Values
  • Equity We believe that access to life-saving care should not be determined by geography or postal code. Our work focuses on closing gaps in Canada’s healthcare system, especially for those in smaller provinces and rural areas.
  • Action We are proactive, mobilizing public support, calling on government leaders, and pushing for policy changes that directly impact pancreatic cancer patients.
  • Empowerment We equip patients and families with knowledge, resources, and self-advocacy tools needed to navigate complex healthcare systems.
  • Community We foster a supportive network, sharing lessons learned and practical tips to help others facing similar challenges.
  • Transparency and Compassion Inspired by Heather’s legacy as a nurse and caregiver, we prioritize clear communication, empathy, and genuine support for those affected by pancreatic cancer.
Whom We Serve
  • Canadians diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, especially those in underserved regions.
  • Families and caregivers navigating the complexities of treatment and support.
  • Healthcare professionals and advocates seeking to improve outcomes and close systemic gaps.
What We Do
  • Provide up-to-date, accessible information on pancreatic cancer, treatment options, and clinical trials.
  • Advocate for healthcare reform, including better access to somatic testing and clinical trials.
  • Offer practical resources and support to reduce delays and improve patient outcomes.
  • Mobilize community action through campaigns, petitions, and public awareness initiatives.
  • Develop educational materials and launch programs like podcasts and starter packs to inform and empower the pancreatic cancer community.
  • Engage in fundraising to support research and patient services, and collaborate with national and international partners, including the World Pancreatic Cancer Coalition.
Get Involved

Volunteers, guest authors, and partners are welcomed to join the Foundation’s efforts—whether through direct service, campaign support, or sharing personal experiences to inspire and inform others.

Volunteer Coordinator Role

Lead the heart of our mission as a Volunteer Coordinator. Join The Heather Cutler Foundation as a Volunteer Coordinator and help us build, support, and grow a passionate community of individuals working to change the future of pancreatic cancer care in Canada.

In this vital role, you’ll be the main point of contact for new and returning volunteers, ensuring every person who joins Team Heather feels welcomed, informed, and empowered. You’ll help foster a positive, inclusive environment and build internal systems to track onboarding, engagement, and project participation.

Why Join Us? The Heather Cutler Foundation was founded from lived experience—and our volunteers are at the core of everything we do. We’re a rapidly growing nonprofit, operating with urgency and clarity to address the gaping holes in Canada’s cancer care system, especially for people in smaller provinces. As our Volunteer Coordinator, you’ll shape the culture and systems that help people from all backgrounds contribute their time and skills to something bigger than themselves. Your work will directly impact how we grow and how we continue to center compassion and equity in everything we do.

Responsibilities
  • Volunteer Onboarding & Engagement Coordinate all stages of volunteer onboarding: application review, interviews, forms collection, orientation scheduling, and issuing credentials.
  • Volunteer Support & Retention Maintain regular check-ins, ensure volunteers have the tools and information they need to succeed, and create a sense of community and appreciation.
  • Scheduling & Project Matching Help place volunteers into projects that suit their skills and availability. Track time commitments and align volunteers with the Foundation’s evolving needs.
  • Internal Communications Use tools like Notion, Slack, and Proton to maintain clear, organized records of volunteer involvement and communication threads.
  • Documentation & Compliance Ensure all volunteers have signed required documentation (e.g., confidentiality, AI use, and external communications policies) and that these are up to date and stored securely.
Qualifications
  • Strong People Skills Friendly, organized, and reliable communicator with a commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful environment.
  • Experience in Volunteer Management Prior experience coordinating volunteers in a nonprofit or community setting preferred.

  • Digital Literacy Comfortable using or learning tools like Notion, Proton, Slack, Google Drive, and scheduling platforms.
  • Independent & Collaborative Able to work remotely while collaborating closely with the Founder and project leads.
  • Mission-Aligned Passion for advocacy, equity in healthcare, and community-building. Familiarity with cancer care is a bonus, but not required.
Role Details
  • Location Remote (Canada-based preferred)
  • Time Commitment ~5–7 hours/week, flexible
  • Employment Type Volunteer
  • Start Date As soon as possible
  • Duration Minimum 3–6 month commitment preferred
