Duties and responsibilities

The Toolmaker Apprentice will support tooling and machining operations within a manufacturing environment. Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the fabrication, adjustment, and improvement of dies, tools, and related components used in production;
  • Interpreting measurements and job specifications to determine required dimensions and preparing machining equipment accordingly;
  • Preparing and securing metal materials and castings by marking, organizing, and positioning them for machining;
  • Operating, setting up, and maintaining various machining equipment required for toolmaking activities;
  • Inspecting machined components and confirming they meet accuracy, quality, and production standards;
  • Assembling, fitting, modifying, or disassembling metal parts using appropriate hand tools and shop equipment;
  • Machining, shaping, and fitting metal parts and castings for producing tooling pieces, patterns, and related components.

This position does not require any provincial license or certification in Ontario.

Qualifications
  • Completion of secondary school (high school diploma);
  • One (1) year or more of hands‑on experience or practical exposure in a toolmaking, machining, or manufacturing environment, preferably within an automotive or industrial setting;
  • Ability to read basic technical drawings, measurements, and work instructions;
  • Willingness to learn and further develop skills under supervision as part of a structured apprenticeship environment;
  • Ability to work safely with hand tools and machining equipment in accordance with workplace safety procedures;
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established production and quality standards; and
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a manufacturing environment and work collaboratively as part of a production team.
