Technical Lead Manager, Backend (Institutional - Derivatives)

About the Team

The Institutional team supports thousands of financial institutions in securely trading and storing digital assets. Within this group, the Derivatives team has launched and scaled a full-featured Futures trading platform (FCM) since 2023. This team manages the entire lifecycle of derivatives—from execution to settlement—and is building the infrastructure for the next wave of institutional crypto adoption.

About the Role

We’re seeking a Technical Lead Manager (TLM) to join our Derivatives team. This is a hybrid role ideal for a Staff-level engineer interested in leading a small team (3–6 engineers) while staying hands-on in building technical solutions. You’ll lead the design and development of core backend services and drive critical architectural decisions for Coinbase’s derivatives trading platform.

Responsibilities

• Design and build scalable, low-latency backend systems for derivatives trade execution and risk management.
• Write high-quality, thoroughly tested code that meets the needs of our institutional customers.
• Provide technical leadership and direction across the team.
• Partner with Product and Engineering to deliver and operate robust, distributed systems at scale.
• Coach and mentor engineers while supporting their career development.
• Promote a culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in backend software engineering.
• Strong experience designing and maintaining scalable, high-throughput, low-latency systems.
• Proven ability to architect and implement impactful solutions to complex, ambiguous problems.
• Deep interest in crypto and blockchain technology, especially in open financial systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior engineering management or team leadership experience.
• Experience building order management systems or real-time risk engines.
• Experience with technologies such as Golang, Docker, AWS, Postgres, MongoDB, and Kafka.
• Exposure to rapid growth environments (startup to mid-size).
• Hands-on experience interacting with onchain elements: Ethereum wallets, ENS, dApps, etc.
