School District 72 operates throughout a large geographic area. Campbell River and Quadra Island schools and our school board office are located on the traditional territory of the Lig?i?dax? people. School District 72 also encompasses the traditional territory of the Klahoose (Cortes), K'ómoks (Sayward), and ???ma?k?u (Bute Inlet) First Nations.

Join Our Team School District 72 is seeking a Temporary Childcare Support Worker to join our team at Cedar Elementary School to help bring the district\'s learning beliefs to life.

School District 72 (Campbell River) is located on the east coast of central Vancouver Island, extending north to Sayward and south to Oyster River. The district includes Read, Cortes, and Quadra islands, serves over 5,600 students in 18 schools with progressive and responsive programs. The district values relationships with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples in these territories and acknowledges their histories and contributions.

About The Role

Childcare Support Worker reports to the District Principal, Childcare & Early Learning. The role is to provide one-on-one support to a 1-2 child(ren) participating in before and after school care at the district facility.

Responsibilities
  • Provide one-on-one support to 1-2 child(ren) with diverse needs. Remain in the child\'s proximity at all times.
  • Participate in age-appropriate activities, modelling language verbally and with communication devices.
  • Guide and assist the child in activities, fostering positive social interactions among students.
  • Support and guide the child in learning program schedules and routines; prepare child for transitions to/from school.
  • Provide positive behaviour support using communication skills to diffuse escalated behaviours; report any extreme or unusual incidents to the supervisor.
  • Ensure a safe environment by avoiding triggers and applying recognised behaviour management techniques.
  • Promote personal health and hygiene; assist with toileting, feeding, and general cleanliness; assist with administration of student medication as indicated on medical forms, under the District Principal\'s direction; ensure adherence to medical routines and/or special diets.
  • Establish positive working relationships with staff, community partners, families, and children.
  • Record and report all accidents/incidents promptly to the District Principal, Childcare & Early Learning.
  • Maintain confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures, including safety requirements and emergency preparedness.
  • Establish reasonable behaviour expectations aligned with the centre\'s policies and program objectives.
  • Understand and act in accordance with policies from the school, district, Ministry of Education, Child Care Licensing Regulation, and WorkSafeBC.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications
  • Grade 12 diploma plus completion of Responsible Adult Course, or completion of a course (or combination of courses) of at least 20 hours in child development, guidance, health and safety, or nutrition.
  • Must be at least 19 years of age in accordance with Community Care and Assisted Living Act, Child Care Licensing Regulations.
  • A valid Emergency First Aid – Community Care Certification.
  • Minimum of 1 year of recent experience working with youth and children or equivalent training/experience.
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills (verbal, written, electronic) with tact, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team with colleagues, parents, and children.
  • Ability to use judgement to select appropriate actions within established methods and procedures.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • Willingness to participate in professional development as provided by the district.
