Overview

The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is the statutory body responsible for regulating Ontario’s capital markets in accordance with the mandate established in the provincial Securities Act and the Commodity Futures Act. The OSC’s mandate is to protect investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices, foster fair, efficient and competitive capital markets and confidence in the capital markets, foster capital formation, and contribute to the stability of the financial system and the reduction of systemic risk. This mandate is performed through policy, operational, and enforcement activities. The OSC also contributes to national and global securities regulation development. Position

OSC Summer Accounting Students — May 2026 – August 2026 — Multiple Positions

Divisions
  • Registration, Inspections and Examinations (RIE): A regulatory division that oversees dealers, advisers and investment fund managers, derivative firms in Ontario relied upon by the public when investing in securities. RIE also oversees market infrastructure entities, including marketplaces, self-regulatory organizations (SROs), and clearing agencies.
  • Corporate Finance: Regulates issuers (other than investment funds) in the public and exempt markets; reviews public distributions of securities, exempt market activities and continuous disclosure of reporting issuers; leads issuer-related policy initiatives; supervises insider reporting, regulates credit rating agencies and oversees the listed issuer function for OSC recognized exchanges.
  • Enforcement: Investigates and litigates breaches of securities laws in Ontario; works with other regulators, SROs and law-enforcement agencies to fight misconduct and protect investors.
  • Finance and Administration (F&A): Provides financial management, analysis, reporting and treasury services to support OSC regulatory responsibilities.
Role and Learning

Summer Accounting Students will develop the technical and enabling competencies needed for the CPA designation. Exposure may include audit and assurance, financial reporting, management accounting, finance and strategy and governance. Placements will be in one of the following divisions: Registration, Inspections and Examinations; Corporate Finance; Enforcement; or Finance and Administration.

Responsibilities (examples)
  • Conduct reviews of registered firms and regulated entities to assess compliance with Ontario securities laws supporting investor protection and confidence in the capital markets.
  • Conduct focused reviews of registered firms’ compliance with internal policies and procedures.
  • Assist with preparing formal reports detailing non-compliance and work with entities to determine corrective actions.
  • Complete continuous disclosure reviews of public company filings.
  • Review and analyze records filed by public companies including financial reports.
  • Perform research on industry-wide trends and patterns.
  • Review records related to complex transactions and assist in assessing them.
  • Apply forensic accounting techniques as part of investigations.
  • Prepare materials for OSC proceedings.
  • Support preparation and review of OSC annual report sections (MD&A, financial statements and note disclosures).
  • Support month-end and quarter-end close procedures (reconciliations, analyses, accruals, financial statements).
  • Update process documentation for SOPs and controls activities.
Qualifications
  • Completed second year or higher; pursuing a university degree in Commerce or Business Administration with a specialization in Accounting; currently pursuing a CPA designation.
  • Ability to manage multiple demands on time; strong communication skills; ability to adapt communication style to audience/client; demonstrated initiative and willingness to learn; ability to build and foster strong relationships.
