Job description

As Structural Steel Specialist, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and delivering required engineering information deliverables (i.e., technical work instructions, bills of materials, drawings/sketches, etc.) to support all steel structure and steel outfit repair and installation activities for ship repair contracts. More specifically, you will:

  • Develop required information deliverables relating to shipyard steel and steel outfit repair activities in ship repair projects.
  • Extract details from specifications and work scopes agreed upon with the client to support work breakdown structure (WBS) planning, development of the estimates for the work, and subsequent creation of effective high-quality job cards (work packages) to support the detailed planning phase.
  • Assign and control engineering bills of materials to ensure that the Planning Department has a clear overview of required materials.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate delivery of all required drawings, sketches and other required information, while adhering to Davie’s internal configuration and change management processes.
  • Support all Project Controls activities as requested.
  • Provide information and input for the estimate and bid development as required.
  • Provide any data or coding requirements to support the creation of integrated software required to support the production engineering processes.
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of production sketches and nesting packages to support detailed planning.
  • Participate in supporting the creation of engineering information in support of steel and steel outfit activities relating to subcontractors.
  • Perform onboard surveys to support steel removals, fabrication, and reinstallation.
  • Ensure all welding procedures are clearly identified as required by the Production and Quality Control Departments.
  • Support any customer or classification technical requirements regarding lifting or structural changes.
  • Responsible for progress reporting, schedule updates, and communication of any issue relating to the timely creation of deliverables during the pre-planning phase of the project.
  • Ensure compliance with the agreed upon procedures for production engineering operations within Davie.
  • Ensure that all relevant scheduling and planning procedures and work instructions are available, understood, and implemented on the project.
  • Promote and ensure understanding of Davie’s health, safety, and environmental (HSE) work culture, providing leadership to foster this culture in everyday activities.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five years of experience in shipbuilding or ship repair, or equivalent combination (obligatory).
  • Degree in Naval Architecture or a combination of post‑secondary degree in a steel-related discipline coupled with extensive experience.
  • Good knowledge of shipbuilding repair and refit processes.
  • Strong competencies in Microsoft Office product suite.
  • Ability to work in confident and independently while prioritizing a large volume of work.
  • Bilingual (French and English). Proficiency in English is required for this position, as the incumbent will be required to interact with our English‑speaking clients, partners, and suppliers.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to effectively interact with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Successfully complete the investigation and security clearance process required by the Federal Government Contract Security Program.
