About 1Password

At 1Password, we’re building the foundation for a safe, productive digital future. Our mission is to unleash employee productivity without compromising security by ensuring every identity is authentic, every application sign-in is secure, and every device is trusted. We innovated the market‑leading enterprise password manager and pioneered Extended Access Management, a new cybersecurity category built for the way people and AI agents work today. As one of the most loved brands in cybersecurity, we take a human‑centric approach in everything from product strategy to user experience. Over 175,000 businesses and millions of people trust us to provide seamless, secure access to their most critical information.

Our Experience, Design and Research (EDR) team

The EDR team is at the heart of this mission—transforming complex security challenges into elegant, human‑centered experiences. We value collaboration, curiosity, and a strong design culture built on customer empathy and innovation.

Role summary

As a Staff Product Designer on XAM, you’ll operate as a strategic leader and expert practitioner, shaping the future of our product experiences in the extended access management space. You’ll define and champion UX vision and strategy for your area of ownership, partnering closely with product and engineering leaders to set direction that balances customer needs, market trends, and business goals.

In this role, you’ll tackle complex, ambiguous problems, leading by example in framing challenges, setting priorities, and using evidence‑based insights to drive design decisions. You’ll mentor and coach other designers, elevate our team’s craft, and influence the roadmap at the highest levels of the organization. Your understanding of security principles will guide your design work while keeping the user experience clear, approachable, and trustworthy.

This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.

What we're looking for
  • 8+ years of experience in product design, with a proven track record of success in 0→1 product development, concept exploration, and early‑stage product design.
  • A highly entrepreneurial mindset—you’re energized by ambiguity, move quickly to clarity, and thrive in uncharted problem spaces.
  • Experience launching complex systems or foundational platform features, especially those related to identity, access management, policies, permissions, or account models.
  • Experience working in or adjacent to cybersecurity or identity is a strong asset—you understand the importance of building secure, trustworthy experiences.
  • A portfolio that shows strength in systems thinking, user flows, and interaction design, ideally with examples of first‑time product launches or concept‑to‑release cycles.
  • Strong collaboration skills and comfort with cross‑functional alignment, especially in highly technical or infrastructure‑heavy product areas.
  • Familiarity with working in design systems, but with the instinct to explore, shape, and define new patterns as needed.
  • A proactive communicator and storyteller, able to create clarity in complex environments, bring others along with your vision, and influence at all levels.
  • Demonstrated success in mentoring peers, leading through influence, and upholding a growth mindset.
  • Proven ability to mentor and uplevel other designers, while role‑modelling curiosity, resilience, and thoughtful design critique.
Bonus points for
  • Strong experience with inclusive design and accessibility, ensuring that designs are usable by all.
  • Experience scaling design systems or shaping design guidelines for complex, multi‑platform products.
  • Contributions to the design community (e.g., open‑source projects, speaking engagements, or published writing).
  • Familiarity with developer tools or technical domains adjacent to cybersecurity.
What you can expect
  • Identify and define design solutions for ambiguous, net‑new product spaces, partnering with product and engineering to chart a course from concept to launch.
  • Lead the creation of a UX vision and strategy for XAM, helping define foundational patterns, mental models, and experiences for users managing identity and application access across environments.
  • Act as an entrepreneurial design lead—bringing structure to ambiguity, rapidly iterating on early concepts, and driving forward with urgency while keeping the long‑term vision in mind.
  • Collaborate closely with your trifecta and stakeholders to uncover customer problems, validate assumptions, and define a product roadmap that balances short‑term delivery with long‑term scalability.
  • Champion evidence‑based design decisions by identifying gaps in data and research, leading or partnering on discovery, and sharing customer insights to align teams.
  • Mentor and coach other designers, especially in navigating early‑stage work, framing new problem spaces, and building toward product‑market fit.
  • Work cross‑functionally to translate technical complexity into intuitive user experiences, leveraging your ability to design scalable systems and flows.
  • Share work early and often, creating alignment across disciplines and modeling a culture of working out loud.
Month 1
  • Dive into our team culture, tools, design process, and workflows, gaining a solid understanding of our customers, their needs, and the broader cybersecurity landscape.
  • Meet with your cross‑functional partners in Product and Engineering to begin exploring your problem space and understanding key priorities.
  • Connect with peers across the EDR team, building relationships that will set the foundation for collaboration and influence.
  • Start shaping an initial design roadmap for your area of ownership, identifying opportunities to bring clarity and direction.
Month 3
  • Begin routinely executing design work from talking to customers and conducting discovery to uncover problems and proposing thoughtful, evidence‑based solutions.
  • Work closely with your trifecta to refine and iterate on your roadmap, integrating customer insights, business needs, and market signals.
  • Actively contribute to design team reviews, critiques, and rituals, modeling constructive feedback and helping elevate the work of your peers.
  • Begin to identify strategic opportunities and gaps, influencing direction beyond your immediate projects.
Month 6+
  • Develop and advocate for a strong point of view on design direction for your product area, inspiring alignment among cross‑functional leaders.
  • Operate as a key design leader, routinely sharing your work in visible and impactful ways.
  • Offer regular mentorship and feedback to your design and cross‑functional peers, helping others grow while setting a high bar for design quality and strategic thinking.
  • Shape and evolve the UX vision for your area of ownership, guiding multiple designers (where applicable) and influencing product strategy at a senior level.
