Position Summary

Current status: Accepting applications for the January 2026 program intake. We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team in the Emergency department at the Stikine D&T Centre.

In accordance with the mission, vision, values and strategic priorities of Northern Health, the Registered Nurse (RN) in Rural General practices works in accordance with the standards of professional practice and code of ethics as outlined by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and within a patient- and family-centered care model. The RN practices in a variety of clinical settings and is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of client care. Working in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the RN ensures the delivery of client-centered care by assisting individual clients and their families as health care needs change. The RN demonstrates a specialized body of knowledge and bases practice on nursing science and related content from other sciences and humanities. Rural community hospitals provide a wide range of services and may require the RN to be competent in multiple clinical settings.

This job description addresses various scenarios where nurses are required to work in one or more areas requiring advanced training and experience.

Training Position Details
  • There is 1 training position available for 2025/26.
  • Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required.
  • Learners should expect to make a 4 - 8 month commitment for this education, including online and in-person learning.
  • Additional study time, outside of scheduled hours, will be required to successfully complete the program.
  • Flexibility for practicums is necessary.
  • Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department.
  • Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an eighteen (18) month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing applicable to the education program.
  • Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If there are no qualified applicants, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants and training will be provided.

Shift Rotation / Hours of Work

Monday to Friday, Days, 08:00 to 16:00

Location: Smithers

Smithers is located in the Bulkley Valley surrounded by three mountain ranges. The town offers an Alpine setting with industry in forestry, tourism, transportation, and agriculture. Smithers provides affordable housing and a balanced lifestyle. The population is approximately 6,000, with an additional 5,000 from surrounding communities that access services. There are educational options available in the area.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Advanced preparation in the clinical specialty of the assigned area as required by the position:
  • Emergency: Advanced preparation in an ED clinical specialty or an equivalent combination of education and experience. CPR within three (3) years.
  • Perinatal: Advanced preparation in a Perinatal clinical specialty or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Current Fetal Health Surveillance (FHS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 2 years. CPR within three (3) years.
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to complete initial and ongoing client assessments and provide nursing care using appropriate technical, therapeutic, and safety interventions.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, the public, medical staff, and the interdisciplinary team.
