Senior Process Engineer

Job Type: Full-time permanent

Department: Engineering

Reporting: Reports directly to the Director, Project Development

Location: Calgary, Alberta (Engineering Team) with travel to plant sites

Position Summary

Carbon Upcycling is seeking a Senior Process Engineer to play a key technical role in the design, commissioning, start-up, and optimization of its commercial-scale facilities. This role will be based within Carbon Upcycling’s engineering team in Calgary and will provide process engineering leadership across projects and operating plants, supporting safe, efficient, and reliable operations while enabling future scale-up of Carbon Upcycling’s technology.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide process engineering leadership across project development, commissioning, start-up, and steady-state operations
  • Support detailed process design, including mass and energy balances, process flow diagrams, and operating philosophies
  • Develop, review, and optimize operating procedures and process control strategies
  • Support plant commissioning and start-up activities, including on-site technical support
  • Monitor process performance, analyze operational data, and identify opportunities for efficiency, throughput, and product quality improvements
  • Troubleshoot complex process issues and collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to implement corrective actions
  • Lead or participate in process hazard analyses (e.g., HAZOPs) and Management of Change (MOC) activities
  • Support scale-up, debottlenecking, and future plant expansion initiatives
  • Collaborate closely with R&D, engineering, and operations teams to transfer technology improvements into projects and plants
  • Support environmental compliance, emissions performance, and sustainability objectives
  • Prepare technical reports, performance summaries, and recommendations for internal and external stakeholders
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance across the organization
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related discipline (Master’s degree considered an asset)
  • 7–10+ years of experience in process engineering roles within industrial, energy, or manufacturing environments
  • Experience in cement, minerals processing, chemical processing, or other heavy industrial facilities preferred
  • Demonstrated experience supporting plant commissioning and start-up activities
  • Strong understanding of unit operations, process control, and industrial process safety
