Role Overview:

Peoples is seeking an experienced, motivated and creative Senior Legal Counsel to provide strategic legal advice and support on both regulatory and corporate matters. They will play a central role in supporting our regulated financial institutions develop our banking, payments and money movement portfolios. This role offers the opportunity to work and hone expertise on a diverse set of regulatory, product and corporate initiatives.

About the Qualifications:
  • LL.B. or J.D. and member of a Canadian provincial bar association.
  • 6+ years of experience practicing financial services regulatory or corporate law, preferably with a mix of private practice and in-house experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian banking regulations and corporate governance requirements.
  • Excellent drafting and analytical skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment.
About the Responsabilties:

Regulatory

  • Provide strategic legal advice and guidance to develop regulatory strategy pursuant to applicable legislation.
  • Collaborate with Product, Compliance and Sales throughout the product development lifecycle to ensure regulatory legal advice is thoughtfully considered.
  • Ensure alignment of products and services with applicable legislation governing lending, credit, prepaid and deposit products, including the Bank Act, the Trust and Loan Companies Act, the PCMLTFA/R, CDIC legislation and by-laws, Payments Canada rules, Codes of Conduct and provincial consumer protection legislation.
  • Monitor evolving financial services regulatory and payments legislation and advise the business on potential impacts and necessary changes.

Corporate

  • Provide legal advice on corporate matters to support ongoing and annual corporate governance requirements, including inter-company transactions, drafting resolutions and other corporate records.
  • Support the Corporate Secretary with board and committee governance and board meeting preparation, including policy development, board mandates and governance processes.

General

  • Analyze complex legal issues, distill them into clear insights and deliver concise, business-oriented guidance to cross-functional teams
  • Build trusted relationships with various legal partners and business teams to provide integrated legal support across the business.
  • Conduct legal research and undertake special projects, as required.
  • Bring creativity and efficiency to the legal engagement process, helping to drive business growth and enable exceptional customer experiences.
  • Work in a fast-paced and detail-oriented environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
  • Work with minimal supervision and exercise excellent judgement on complex, confidential and sensitive decisions.

About the work environment:

Peoples Group offers a flexible and hybrid work environment. In this role you will work a combination of in-office and remotely from home. Typically, you'll be working regular business hours, Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 4:30pm with flexibility around start/end times.

Compensation:

Peoples Group is pleased to offer employees a competitive annual salary plus a discretionary profit share opportunity. Salary for this position will vary between $180,000 and $220,000 per year depending on the knowledge, skills, abilities and experience that the chosen candidate possesses.
