Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Financial Services - Operations, the Senior Finance Officer provides a full range of clerical and customer support services for accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receiving, utilities, and taxation functions and reconciles sub-ledgers to the various asset and liability general ledger accounts. There is responsibility for handling and resolving customer inquiries and maintaining files for the department. Incumbent is required to rotate within the Finance Division as deemed necessary by the Manager. This position will assist with the coordination of the day-to-day operations and provide mentorship, review, and guidance to the Finance Officers.

The Senior Finance Officer performs the following types of tasks:

  • Prepares and reviews back-up documentation in support of draft working papers for interim and annual audits and responding to field work enquiries from Auditors
  • Supports the Manager, Financial Services, to resolve technical or unusual customer questions and problems for one or more specific areas
  • Continuously works on improving processes to improve customer service and the accuracy of financial information and procedures
  • Reconciles various types of accounts including reconciling the sub-ledger to asset and liability general ledger accounts for all departments as well as accounts receivable, utility and taxation customer accounts
  • Provides mentorship and guidance for less experienced colleagues
  • Supports employee onboarding; provides on the job training and support as required
Qualifications

This position requires the incumbent to have a diploma in accounting or a related field. Enrollment in a CPA Professional Education Program or CPA Prep program is also required. In addition, a minimum of four years of practical experience in an accounting or financial environment is required, along with one year of supervisory experience.

This position requires proficiency in MS Office suite, a demonstrated ability to perform independently, utilizing sound judgement, a strong understanding of accounting principles, the ability to clearly convey messages both verbally and in writing, and demonstrated time management skills reflective of the need to coordinate various timelines and deadlines.

Salary

The City of Yellowknife offers a starting salary of $92,039.53 as well as a comprehensive benefits package including monthly housing and travel allowances, a defined benefit pension plan, and relocation assistance.
