Job description

SYSTRA Canada is an engineering and consulting firm whose primary focus is to offer transportation solutions, whether for passengers or goods: feasibility studies of building a new railway line, increasing the capacity of the existing infrastructure, privatization of a railway.

Context

The ALTO Project is recognized as one of the flagship infrastructure initiatives of the Government of Canada. It aims to develop over 1,000 km of new passenger rail service connecting major urban centers, including Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City.

We are seeking a Field Technician to join the Environment and Engineering team within the Intercity and Heavy Rail Group. The successful candidate will support technical surveys and field data collection for the ALTO high-speed train project and other major rail initiatives across Canada.

Missions/Main Duties

1. Fluvial-Morphological Monitoring

  • Map and measure erosion zones, capture geo-referenced photos, and install permanent markers.
  • Conduct topographical and bathymetric surveys using specialized equipment (total station, GPS, echo sounder); create river profiles and validate data.
  • Inspect riprap and stabilization structures for integrity and document findings.
  • Perform drone surveys (photogrammetry/LIDAR), process data for mapping and integrate results into GIS.
  • Prepare detailed field reports.

2. Hydrological Monitoring

  • Install and operate flow and water level measurement devices, record and calibrate data.

3. Surface Deposit Characterization

  • Collect and analyze sediment samples; map deposits and document facies with sketches and photos.

4. Data Validation & Reporting

  • Ensure quality and organization of all field data; prepare and integrate data into databases, support analyses, and produce maps and reports (CAD/GIS).

5. On-Site Construction Monitoring

  • Oversee construction for geotechnical and environmental compliance, monitor mitigation measures, and produce progress/surveillance reports.

6. General Tasks

  • Use tablets or field notebooks for data entry, ensure equipment readiness, comply with safety protocols, organize field logistics, communicate effectively, and contribute to technical reports.
Profile/Skills

Education: College diploma (DEC) in Surveying, Geomatics, Environmental Technology, Applied Geology Technology, or a related field. Equivalent diplomas from other provinces (e.g., GIS, Environmental Technician/Technology, Geological Technician/Technology) are also accepted.

Years of experience: 10 to 15 years experience in a similar role.

  • Proficient with AutoCAD (or similar) and ArcGIS.
  • Experience using total stations and differential GPS.
  • Strong skills in data validation, organization, and processing.
  • Ability to produce plans and maps using CAD/GIS software.
