Job summary

A public sector organization is seeking a Safety Program Manager to ensure compliance with safety legislation and implement departmental safety policies in Yukon. The successful candidate will conduct audits, develop safety procedures, and deliver training. Essential qualifications include experience in workplace safety and a Yukon Class 5 driver’s licence. This role offers a chance to make a significant impact on Yukon communities and requires collaboration with various stakeholders. Travel and working in adverse conditions are expected.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a Yukon Class 5 driver's licence.
  • Experience in developing safety policies and procedures.
  • Certification in Standard First Aid and Incident Investigation is preferred.

Responsibilities

We are currently seeking a talented individual to join our Transportation team. This position is responsible for supporting the field level implementation of Departmental and Transportation Maintenance Branch (TMB) health and safety related policies and procedures designed to address injury / loss prevention and regulatory compliance with applicable safety legislation. The position is responsible for conducting job hazard assessments and safety audits of highway maintenance operations (worksites, ferry operations) and workplaces (e.g. Grader Stations) throughout the Yukon. This position plays a key role in the field facilitating the review, development, and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures, facilitating and/or delivering safety related training, and the supporting the maintenance of TMB’s Branch’s Safety Management System and COR certification program.

Essential Qualifications
  • Experience with interpreting WSCB Act and Regulations and the Workplace compliance standards.
  • Experience in conducting workplace inspections, incident investigations, and workplace audits for industrial operations.
  • Experience developing safety policies and procedures, as they relate to operations and maintenance activities in both industrial and administrative settings.
  • Experience planning, creating, reviewing, updating, and collaborating with subject matter experts on the development of policies, Safe Work Practices and Safe Job Procedures industrial activities.
  • Experience using, and/or administration of Safety Management Systems (e.g. Workhub), Fleet Management Systems, and communication system devices (e.g., , Inreach, VHF radios, satellite phone, etc.).
  • Experience in development, assessment, delivery, and evaluation of training materials and curriculums in Classroom and/or Field settings.
  • Experience or course work indicating knowledge of Safety Management Systems would be an asset.
  • Experience and/or accredited certification as a trainer in industry recognized programs such as, Standard First Aid, Incident Investigation, WHIMIS, Adult Education, Industrial trades, etc., would be considered an asset.
  • Certified Safety Professional, National Safety Construction Officer (NCSO), or National Health and Safety Administrator (NHSA) designation would be considered an asset.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must have and maintain a Yukon Class 5 driver’s licence.
  • TMB certification on light duty vehicles must be obtained within 1 month of hire.
  • Transportation Dangerous Goods and WHMIS Certificate (must be obtained within 1 month of hire).
  • Standard first aid certification.
  • Incident Investigation training (must be obtained within 1 year of hire).
  • Internal Auditor Course (must be obtained within 3 months of hire).Certified Safety Professional, National Safety Construction Officer (NCSO), or National Health and Safety Administrator (NHSA) designation, or able to obtain an NCSO or NHSA designation (must be obtained within 1 year of hire).
Job Requirements
  • Travel;
  • Working in adverse weather conditions;
  • Working outside of headquarters area for extended periods of time;
  • Mandatory use of personal protective equipment.
