Overview

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has a vacancy for the position of Risk Manager within the Department of Quality, Patient Safety and Enterprise Risk. Reporting to the Manager Enterprise Risk Management, the incumbent will work collaboratively with risk management and quality and patient safety teams, senior leadership, directors, managers, frontline staff and various internal and external stakeholders across Sunnybrook's campuses to address risk management issues and implement organization-wide policies and other initiatives to promote patient safety and mitigate risk.

Risk Management Duties :

Responsibilities
  • Operational Risk Management and Patient Safety: provide expert consultation and advice on patient care policy and administrative matters with internal constituents including senior leaders, managers, physicians, clinical staff, corporate support departments and patient safety; review/audit/edit Safety Event Reports and ensure accuracy due diligence in investigation and follow-up by/with stakeholders; monitor Safety Event Reports for trends and bring findings to applicable stakeholders.
  • Policy development and Emergency Preparedness: provide risk consultation to develop and revise policies, procedures and select Emergency Response Codes to avoid and/or control risk in collaboration with Emergency Preparedness leads; provide onsite leadership at select emergency codes and during unplanned infrastructure disruptions to ensure effective communication, response and return to business operations.
  • External risk identification and regulatory liaison: respond to external sources of risk identification (e.g., Coroners requests, jury recommendations, regulatory college complaints, product hazard and recall notifications) and lead or participate in related activities.
  • Committee leadership: participate in and/or lead key risk and patient safety related committees (e.g., System Review/QCIPA committee, Police-Hospital Liaison Committee) and serve as a Risk Management representative on select corporate level committees.
  • Quality of Care Reviews: lead risk response to serious safety events and critical patient incidents, support clinical and non-clinical teams liaising with patients/families, conduct investigations, liaise with hospital leadership, and lead QCIPA and non-QCIPA system reviews to implement recommendations.
  • Quality of Care / System Review Committee: share system-level recommendations for improvement with operational and senior leadership for feedback and endorsement; provide support and guidance to clinical teams on disclosure and sharing of recommendations with patients and families.
  • Claims Management: lead identification and management of potential and actual professional liability, property, malpractice and personal injury claims; lead investigations of claims with hospital adjuster and legal counsel; represent hospital at Examinations for Discovery; support and guide staff, defendants, managers and others through the legal process.
  • Integrated Risk Management (IRM) and risk mitigation: support the organization’s IRM program through engagement with leaders regarding new and existing enterprise risks, mitigation strategies and implementation of controls; utilize the HIROC IRM Risk Register application to document risk assessment progress and action planning.
  • Risk Mitigation and business continuity: ensure annual completion of Risk Assessment Checklists (RAC) by all stakeholders; assess, identify and mitigate organizational and reputational risk related to planned high-risk service shutdowns, utilities and facilities renewal projects; provide guidance on contingency planning to ensure business continuity; work with stakeholders to maximize opportunities for collaboration and integration of best practices and to meet legal and regulatory requirements.
  • General risk oversight: identify and mitigate risk at every opportunity with a focus on improving patient, staff and public safety; ensure appropriate actions are taken to address identified deficiencies/areas for improvement.
Qualifications / Skills
  • Health Care and/or Health Sciences related undergraduate degree required (clinical background with minimum of 5 years of acute care experience preferred); Masters degree an asset; current registration with a recognized health profession college or regulatory body if applicable.
  • Minimum 4 years experience in healthcare risk management, claims management and/or healthcare leadership role strongly preferred.
  • Formal training or certification in Patient Safety and/or Quality Improvement.
  • Healthcare Risk Management Diploma or Certification from an applicable program completed or in progress (e.g., Accreditation Canada, OHA, HIROC, Osgoode School of Law, etc.) is considered an asset.
  • Experience with online RL incident reporting programs, electronic patient charts, HIROC Risk Register is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Incident Analysis Framework.
  • Proven leadership skills and excellence in collaboration with other healthcare leaders and stakeholders; strong critical thinking, attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple demands in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Effective communication with all levels of staff, physicians, volunteers, families and community partners; demonstrated facilitation, conflict resolution and negotiation skills to lead groups to consensus.
  • Strong interpersonal diplomacy and communication skills (written, verbal and presentation); experience in preparing educational materials and delivering presentations to large groups.
