Your opportunity

Under the general direction of the Assistant Dean, Administration & Operations, the Residence Steward oversees the operation of the residence front desk and indirectly supervises the Front Desk Porter team. As part of the Innis Residence team in the Office of the Dean of Students, the Residence Steward is holds an important student-facing position and acts as a first-point of contact for Innis College residents and students at the Innis Residence Front Desk. Responsibilities include greeting residents, students, and visitors, transferring telephone calls, processing mail and parcels, monitoring building access, issuing keys and equipment, and other reception duties. Additionally, the Residence Steward is responsible for supporting key residence operations, including scheduling other front desk staff, reviewing key and equipment audits, ordering supplies, responding to email inquiries, and supporting semesterly transitions of fall/winter students and summer guests.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Responding to enquiries within the defined scope of the role and redirecting as appropriate
  • Checking residence database to confirm resident identification
  • Updating and maintaining front desk porter's manual
  • Applying established standards to control the distribution of access to designated University spaces
  • Performing routine building checks
  • Liaising with facilities or caretaking staff to facilitate resolution of building issues
  • Directing the activities of casual staff
Essential Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Experience with two (2) years recent and relevant experience working in a residence environment, preferably with direct experience working with a diverse group of students.
  • Experience providing front facing customer service
  • Experience coordinating the collection and issuing of keys
  • Experience with maintaining and updating logs through out the working day
  • Experience with recruitment, and training of casual staff and/or student staff
  • Experience directing activities of casual staff and/or student staff
  • Experience coordinating staff schedules to ensure proper coverage
  • Experience with a reservation/residence database
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to adapt to new and changing priorities
  • Demonstrated strong customer service skills with experience promoting equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Intermediate skills with Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Proven ability to work independently
