Job Description

This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus, Edmonton.

The Division of Rheumatology is an internationally recognized group with diverse research interests, including but not limited to rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, vasculitis, lupus, osteoporosis, artificial intelligence and medical education.

The Division of Rheumatology invites applications for a Research Associate who will serve as a shared research resource for the division. In this role, you will support multiple rheumatologists and teams, helping to turn ideas into high-quality studies that improve care for people living with rheumatic diseases.

Working across a portfolio of projects, you will contribute to study design, protocol and ethics development, data collection and analysis, and the preparation of manuscripts and presentations. This position is well-suited to someone with graduate training in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, or a related field who enjoys applying their methodological skills to diverse research questions rather than working within a single lab.

Responsibilities

As a divisional resource, the Research Associate will collaborate with a broad group of rheumatology investigators, trainees, and research staff to move projects from concept to completion. Current and future projects may include registry development and analysis, patient and provider surveys, quality improvement initiatives, and both quantitative and qualitative studies across a range of rheumatic diseases and populations. All of this work is grounded in a shared goal: improving access to and quality of care for people with rheumatic conditions.

Reporting to the Director of the Division of Rheumatology, the Research Associate will support multiple investigators simultaneously, helping clarify research questions, select appropriate methods, and keep projects on track. Because this position is not tied to a single principal investigator, there is meaningful variety in day-to-day work and the opportunity to build a broad, impactful portfolio. The successful candidate will be comfortable working both independently and as part of small project teams, and will play a key role in supporting junior faculty and other team members as they build their research programs.

  • Work in collaboration to design projects, data collection protocols, and standards under the supervision of Principal Investigators.
  • Determines the most appropriate methodology to meet identified research goals.
  • Oversees/conducts data collection. Conducts advanced analysis of research data and results.
  • Summarizes, analyzes, and organizes data for publication.
  • Participates in writing research papers, preparing presentations, and/or other publications, potentially as a co-author or presenter.
  • Assists and may lead in the preparation of research grant applications and contract proposals.
Qualifications

Minimum

  • Master's or Ph.D. level degree in an associated field, including but not limited to statistics, public health, community health, clinical epidemiology
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced by scientific writing (thesis, reports, or publications) and presentations to academic or professional audiences.
  • Experience working collaboratively within interdisciplinary research teams (e.g., clinicians, trainees, coordinators, analysts).
  • Experience managing research projects or components of projects (e.g., tracking timelines, coordinating tasks, monitoring progress against milestones).

Preferred

  • Demonstrated skills in data visualization, interpretation, presentation, and reporting (i.e. Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience preparing or supporting competitive research grant applications (e.g., drafting methods sections, budgets, or work plans).
  • Experience with mentoring and training junior team members and/or students.
  • Keeps up to date on research, leading practices, and trends in the specialty discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience with advanced quantitative methods, such as:
    • Propensity score methods (matching, weighting, IPTW)
    • Causal inference approaches
    • Sensitivity analyses and robustness checks
  • Experience with qualitative research methods (e.g., designing interview/focus group guides, conducting interviews, coding and thematic analysis) and/or mixed methods projects.
  • Experience creating clear, publication-ready tables and figures and presenting results to diverse audiences, using tools such as Excel, PowerPoint, R, or similar software.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of practices to ensure access, foster community connections, and increase belonging.
  • Evidence of ongoing engagement with current research, leading practices, and trends in the relevant specialty areas (e.g., rheumatology, health services, or outcomes research).
