Responsibilities
Tasks
- Administer medications
- Apply aseptic techniques including sterile dressing
- Ensure infection control
- Monitor nutritional intake
- Observe and record medication’s therapeutic and side effects
- Prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving and sterilizing operative areas
- Record medication’s therapeutic and side effects observations in patient files
- Take vital signs
- Provide technical assistance to surgeons by laying out instruments, setting up equipment, assisting surgical teams with gowns and gloves and passing instruments to surgeons
- Clean and sterilize the operating room and instruments
- Provide pre-operative and post-operative personal and comfort care
- Monitor established respiratory therapy and intravenous therapy
- Provide safety and health education to individuals and their families
- Provide nursing services, within defined scope of practice, to patients based on patient assessment and care planning procedures
- Monitor patients' progress, evaluate effectiveness of nursing interventions and consult with appropriate members of healthcare team
Credentials
Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses
- Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) neonatal resuscitation program
- Certified foot care nurse
- Eligible for licensure as a practical nurse by the province/territory of work
- Intravenous (IV) therapy Certification
- Completion of the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certificate
- Certified Nurse in Critical Care - Canada (CNCC-C)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certificate
- CPR Certificate
- Licensure as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse by provincial authorities
- First Aid Certificate
