This is a Temporary contract for up to Ten (10) months.

This unique and evolving nursing specialization is ideal for individuals who are interested in mental health and are looking to develop a skill set that includes both medical and psychiatric nursing.

With a strong emphasis on holistic care, you’ll have an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the various factors that impact a person’s life including social, financial, and environmental determinants.

As a general psychiatry unit, we see diverse patient diagnoses including mental health disorders, schizophrenia, cognitive impairment and depression. This provides fantastic learning opportunities, and your professional development is emphasized.

About this team

Affiliated with the University of Toronto, this is a 15-bed general psychiatry inpatient unit for the adult population with various mental health diagnoses, including mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders. The unit is also specialized in geriatric psychiatry and perinatal psychiatry as Mount Sinai is recognized as a specialist in both areas.

In this role you will
  • Deliver comprehensive psychiatric nursing care to patients and families in a supportive and culturally sensitive manner.
  • Conduct psychiatric nursing assessments.
  • Utilize psychiatric nursing interventions such as one-to-one meetings, supporting the use of distress tolerance, grounding and other psychotherapeutic skills.
  • Participate in meetings with the interprofessional care team to review patient care plans.
  • Provide psychoeducation to patients and families.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.
Job Requirements
Mandatory
  • Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
  • Graduate of a CNO-approved bachelor’s degree in nursing program, or equivalent combined education and experience.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
Preferred
  • A baccalaureate degree from a CNO-approved nursing program. Applicants in their final year or near completion will be considered.
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certification or equivalent.
  • 1–2 years recent experience in acute care inpatient psychiatric nursing.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Ability to foster sound working relationships with patients, families, interprofessional team members, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to function in a liaison role with community resources.
  • Active involvement in unit-based quality improvement initiative.
