Your Opportunity

The Patient Flow Nurse (PFN) is a centralized Edmonton Zone role within the Integrated Operations Center (IOC), supporting real-time patient flow coordination across the continuum of care. Operating in a non-direct care capacity, the PFN uses clinical expertise, data analytics, and situational awareness to assist in destination/deployment decisions and system-wide capacity management. Working collaboratively with EMS Supervisors, RAAPID North, Patient Flow Coordinators/AHN, Capacity Leads, and site-based teams, the PFN helps identify and address bottlenecks, supports proactive destination decisions, and contributes to the smooth movement of patients across acute care and community settings. This role is ideal for Registered Nurses with strong clinical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and a passion for system-level coordination and quality improvement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor dashboards and data systems to identify zone-wide capacity issues.
  • Collaborate with PFC/AHN, EMS and RAAPID to support destination decisions.
  • Assist AHNs in destination/deployment planning and documentation.
  • Under AHN guidance, elevate site‑specific issues and service disruptions as per zone protocols.
  • Participate in daily capacity calls and contribute to zone situational awareness.
  • Provide cross coverage with AHN during breaks and transitions.
Description

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well‑being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family‑centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $39.58–$54.16 per hour. Upon obtaining a full licence, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable.

Required Qualifications

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS‑HCP) certification. Additional Required Qualifications
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

  • With multiple competing priorities.
  • 3–5 years of related acute care, emergency room and continuum of care experience.
  • Ability to handle conflict and work towards solutions.
  • Familiarity with EMS and RAAPID processes.
  • Proficiency in clinical systems such as Connect Care, Tableau, and REPAC.
  • Ability to interpret data and make informed destination/deployment decisions under the guidance of the PFC/AHN.
  • Comfortable working in a high‑volume, technology‑driven environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong assessment skills and triage training are an asset.
  • Experience in emergency department, bed management, capacity coordination, or patient flow.
  • Knowledge of Edmonton Zone services and site‑specific workflows.
  • Experience with escalation protocols.
