About The Role

The Provincial Mental Health Clinical Consultant improves access to First Nations Health Benefit counselling services for First Nations people in the FNHA Mental Health and Wellness team and in collaboration with key departments of FNHA, regions and FNHA health system partners. Services include consultation, intake, assessment, collaborative care planning, education, navigation, and connection to other resources. This is conducted through a decolonizing lens, recognizing clients’ intersectionality and healing journey to tailor treatment. The role supports a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team that practices from a First Nations worldview and adheres to applicable governing body guidelines. The position provides team collaboration and trauma-informed care to promote, maintain and restore client health.

Responsibilities
  • Provide mental health and wellness support through consultation, intake, assessment, care planning, education, navigation, and connection to resources.
  • Collaborate with FNHA departments, regions and health system partners to improve access to services for First Nations people.
  • Apply a decolonizing approach and trauma-informed, culturally safe practices in all interactions.
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team and adhere to governing body guidelines relevant to the role.
Qualifications

Education And Occupational Requirements

  • A master’s degree in psychology, Social Work (Clinical Counselling), or related health professional qualifications with specialization in mental health.
  • Advanced training in threat/risk assessment and/or complex trauma; training in brief intervention approaches (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy or motivational interviewing).

Occupational Certification

  • Current practicing registration with the applicable professional governing body in B.C. plus designation as either a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), a Certified Clinical Counsellor (CCC), a Registered Social Worker (RSW), or Psychologist designation.
  • Current valid Class 5 B.C. driver’s license and willingness to submit a driver’s abstract.

Experience

  • Five to seven years of experience working with complex social systems or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Three years of recent direct experience in clinical mental health and addictions settings working with children, youth and/or adults.
  • Three years of experience conducting mental health, addictions, threat/risk and trauma assessments, intervention and post-venation treatment services.
  • Minimum three years of related experience working with First Nations people and communities, providing mental health services with holistic First Nations approaches.

Knowledge and Ability

  • Knowledge of therapeutic and counselling modalities and brief intervention approaches.
  • Sound knowledge of emergency psychiatry, crisis intervention, addiction issues, culturally safe and trauma-informed care, recovery-oriented care, and severe and persistent mental illness.
  • Experience working from a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive perspective.
  • Knowledge of assessment and screening tools for suicide and violence risk and threat.
