R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited (Burnside) is seeking a knowledgeable, result-driven, and enthusiastic Project Manager / Senior Transportation Design Engineer with a minimum of 8 years of experience to join our expanding transportation team. This position is based out of one of our Greater Toronto Area (GTA) offices, such as Mississauga, Hamilton, or Guelph.

As part of our Transportation Group, you will work under the guidance of a Vice President of Transportation Design GTA on various road design projects, from feasibility studies to construction, serving both public and private sector clients.

Our team specializes in road design and environmental assessments across a broad geographic area. Projects range from small road enhancements to large-scale regional improvements, including roundabouts, Active Transportation, and Complete Streets engineering. We support clients throughout the project lifecycle, from concept to completion.

What to expect?

You will work closely with the Vice President of Transportation Design – GTA, playing a key role in developing our public sector transportation design practice. Responsibilities include managing transportation infrastructure projects such as roads, highways, and trails for public sector clients, as well as supporting major private sector projects.

The Role

Reporting to the Vice President, Transportation Design – GTA, your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing proposals, managing projects, and ensuring successful delivery;
  • Leading a team of engineers, technologists, and technicians in areas such as:
  • Active Transportation and Complete Streets design;
  • Transportation Class Environmental Assessments;
  • Project tendering and construction administration;
  • Traffic management plans;
  • Feasibility studies, utility management, and cost estimates;
  • Constructability reviews;
  • Design standards reviews.

Additional duties involve:

  • Defining project scope, budgets, and timelines;
  • Preparing and sealing transportation designs and reports;
  • Managing client relationships;
  • Monitoring project performance, staff utilization, and profitability;
  • Ensuring quality and timely delivery;
  • Mentoring staff and supporting their development;
  • Providing technical advice and assisting in proposal development;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Professional Knowledge & Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a transportation professional with at least 8 years of experience, possessing:

  • Registration as a professional engineer in Ontario or eligibility for licensure;
  • Experience managing transportation design projects, including environmental assessments, detailed design, and contract administration;
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and MicroStation Inroads;
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills;
  • Experience mentoring staff;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Ability to multitask across multiple projects;
  • A valid Ontario driver’s license and vehicle.
