About the Position

The Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) program at Lethbridge Polytechnic prepares students to safely handle, clean, assemble, function‑test, and package surgical instruments and medical equipment.

We are seeking Practicum Advisors to support and mentor students during their practicum placements.

Responsibilities
  • Support students over a 10-week practicum placement.
  • Meet/check in with assigned student(s) weekly to guide, observe, and provide feedback on their performance.
  • Ensure students are meeting defined competencies and professional standards.
  • Communicate progress, successes, and concerns to the practicum coordinator at Lethbridge Polytechnic.
  • Provide feedback, coaching, and guidance to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and safety awareness needed for medical device reprocessing.
Position Details
  • Act as the primary point of contact for assigned practicum student(s) throughout the 10-week placement.
  • Conduct weekly check‑ins (remote via phone or Teams call) to monitor student progress, discuss tasks, and address questions.
  • Complete and submit progress reports to the practicum coordinator as required (mid‑point and end‑of‑placement evaluations, or as per program schedule).
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and corrective feedback when competencies are not being met; recommend remediation or additional support if needed.
  • Serve as a mentor, modelling best practices, professionalism, communication, and workplace ethics in a healthcare setting.
Required Qualifications
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician who has completed either the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management exam or the Canadian Standards Association exam (or similar).
  • Previous experience working in medical device reprocessing (central sterile processing), surgical instrumentation handling, or related health‑care support in a hospital/clinical environment (2 years or more).
  • Strong familiarity with regulations, safety standards, and best practices in medical device reprocessing (sterilization, infection control, instrument handling, packaging, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to supervise and mentor students effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, reliability, and professionalism.
  • Comfortable providing constructive feedback and supporting a student’s learning and growth.
  • Ability to commit to weekly supervision and timely reporting throughout the 10‑week practicum period.
This is a fully remote role. Candidates do not need to live in the Lethbridge area. Familiarity with Alberta standards and practices is an asset.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as an MDR practicum advisor at Lethbridge Polytechnic or other post‑secondary institution is an asset.
Salary

Commensurate with education in accordance with the current Lethbridge Polytechnic Faculty Association Collective Agreement Sessional Faculty grid.
