Position Overview

The incumbent assumes shift responsibility for operating and maintaining building essential services in a safe and efficient manner. Operates and maintains electric, gas, and oil-fired boilers, large centrifugal water chillers and associated auxiliary equipment. Efficiently operates building automation systems, making adjustments when required to ensure normal operation of all building plant systems.

Experience
  • Previous experience as a shift engineer, preferably in a health care, commercial, or institutional setting.
  • Wide range of experience with heating, pneumatic and air handling systems preferred.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Grade XII education.
  • Interprovincial certificate and graduate from a recognized technical school or equivalent preferred.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • In accordance with the Regulations under the Power Engineers Act, a valid and current Manitoba Third Class Power Engineer’s certificate required.
Qualifications And Skills
  • Must be able to interpret mechanical, electrical, architectural and pneumatic drawings & technical manuals.
  • Must adhere to all Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health regulations.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills in dealing with all levels of Hospital personnel.
  • Ability to plan and organize work to meet demanding schedules.
  • Demonstrated regard for safety.
  • Ability to handle the demands of shift work.
  • Ability to work in a computerized office system environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Manual dexterity for the effective performance of job duties.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude is essential.
  • May vary from general maintenance shop conditions subject to extremes in temperature, high noise levels, dust, odours, or fumes, etc.
  • Wet and messy conditions may be encountered when cleaning sumps, boilers, tanks, plumbing interceptors, etc.
  • Conditions demanding heavy lifting could also be expected.
  • Possible handling of hazardous waste and/or controlled products.
  • Emergency situations will require the ability to work well under pressure.
  • The incumbent is required to perform duties in patient care areas under occupied conditions, including isolation rooms.
  • The incumbent works a scheduled rotation 8-or-12-hour shift, day/nights and weekends and assumes responsibility for all areas under his jurisdiction (works independently outside of regular working hours).

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
