Job summary

A healthcare provider in Ontario is seeking a Personal Support Worker to deliver patient-centered care in Cobourg. The ideal candidate will have a PSW Certificate and experience in an acute care setting. Responsibilities include personal hygiene assistance and support for patients with challenging behaviors. Role Overview

The Northumberland Hills Hospital Personal Support Worker (PSW) provides quality patient-centered care, including assistance with personal hygiene, activities of daily living and mobility according to the plan of care. The PSW supports mouth care and feeding, skin care for treatment and prevention of Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries, and works with patients who have dementia or challenging behaviors by implementing stimulating activities and engaging with patients as per care plans. The PSW works and documents autonomously under the supervision of a regulated health care provider.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Personal Support Worker - Ontario College Certificate from an accredited community college
  • Registration with the Health and Supportive Care Providers Oversight Authority (HSCPOA) is required
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), Level II: Basic Rescuer certification
  • Current CPR and First Aid
  • Recent patient care experience as a PSW in an acute care hospital setting preferred
  • Knowledge of body mechanics for one-person transport by wheelchair or stretcher; understanding of lifting and transferring patients; experience with stretchers, beds, wheelchairs
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to work with patients, families, and healthcare team
  • Applies NHH values and professional practice standards to patient care
  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Knowledge of person and family-centered care with geriatric focus
Physical Effort and Working Conditions
  • Handle a challenging workload with high patient volumes and acuity

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good interpersonal and verbal communication; computer skills
  • Maintain patient focus and demonstrate reliable attendance
  • Stand, walk, and stand for extended periods; bend or squat as needed
  • Pushing and pulling equipment; transport patients on stretchers/beds or wheelchairs
  • Assist patients during transfers within the hospital
  • Move wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds through corridors
  • May wear personal protective equipment and may encounter unpleasant tasks, sights or odours
  • Adhere to safe work practices and report injuries, illnesses and hazards
  • Contribute to patient safety and safety culture
Employment Requirements

Successful applicants must provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check completed within the last year, within the first 60 days of employment. Ontario Provincial Police checks may take up to about 10 weeks. Successful applicants must also complete the Health Care Worker Health review process, including providing an up-to-date immunization record to comply with the Ontario Hospital Association Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocols within the first 30 days of employment. Northumberland Hills Hospital operates a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all staff. Parts or all of the hiring process may be conducted virtually. We are a scent-free environment; please avoid wearing strongly scented fragrances when visiting the hospital.
