Overview

Your Opportunity: This opportunity is for the Strathcona Community Hospital, Emergency Department. The facility offers a 24/7 Emergency Department along with a variety of Ambulatory, Laboratory, and Diagnostic Imaging services. An LPN/Orthopedic Technician delivers high quality nursing care to patients across the lifespan within the Emergency Department. Responsibilities include assessment and care of patients with orthopedic emergencies including cast duties and traction, as well as teaching regarding casts and orthopedic appliances, and all other general duties of an LPN practicing to full scope in an emergency department. Successful candidates for this position will be responsible for a multi patient assignment where they will work independently and with an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate patient care.

As an Orthopaedic Technician (Ortho Tech), you will apply, adjust, and remove casts, splints and traction equipment utilized in the care of orthopaedic patients (clients, residents). You will observe, monitor, report and document changes in the patient\'s physical, mental and emotional state, while providing safe and effective, quality care. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

  • Apply, adjust, and remove casts, splints, and traction equipment for orthopaedic patients; observe, monitor, report, and document changes in patient condition.
Qualifications
  • Required Qualifications: Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Completion of an accredited specialty Orthopaedic Technician program. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
  • Additional Required Qualifications: Successful completion and certification of a recognized Orthopedic Technician program, with specific authorization from CLPNA to practice in orthopedics. Minimum of two years recent experience working in an emergency department. Recent experience and a high comfort level managing a patient assignment of four to six patients of all ages and demographics. Preference will be given to those applicants with previous Connect Care training in an ASAP environment.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Maintains competencies through continuous learning. Ability to balance numerous demands and priorities. Proven ability to work within a team environment and contribute to patient planning processes. Strong assessment and communication skills (verbal and written).
