A municipal regional district is seeking an experienced Occupational Health + Safety Specialist to support its Wastewater Services. The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is located on the central east coast of Vancouver Island, serving Nanaimo, Lantzville, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, and seven unincorporated electoral areas. About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, Employee Health, Safety and Wellness, the Occupational Health + Safety Specialist (OHS Specialist) is fully funded to provide support to Wastewater Services (WWS) and will work closely with and support the Manager, Wastewater Services. The OHS Specialist provides advice, support, and analysis to develop systems that control hazards and exposures affecting people, equipment, materials, and the environment within WWS. The position aims to promote sustainable business practices and reduce or eliminate fatalities, injuries, occupational illnesses, and property/environmental damage.
The OHS Specialist supports all WWS facility locations on site and ensures that WWS employees meet OHS statutory and corporate obligations to foster a culture of continuous improvement and compliance. The role leads the implementation, coordination, and review of safety measures, promotes continuous improvement, and fosters a strong safety culture.
This is an opportunity for an experienced Health + Safety Specialist to develop and support safety management in collaboration with a strong municipal wastewater services department. The successful candidate will bring strong communication and relationship-building skills and a commitment to health and safety practices. The preferred candidate will hold a CRSP certification and a post-secondary degree, with five (5) years of experience leading Occupational Health and Safety programs, ideally in infrastructure and industrial operations within a safety-sensitive, unionized environment.
The salary range for this position is $99,416 - $114,082 annually and is supplemented by a competitive total compensation plan. Possession of a Class 5 Driver’s License is required.
