Job description

Reporting to the CFO, the Manager, Finance & Accounting plays a critical leadership role at WINS, overseeing accounting operations, financial management, and strategic financial analysis. The position operates within the Business Support Team, while working collaboratively with WINS’ other departments and team members to achieve WINS’ mission and vision and make a positive impact on our community. This role is particularly critical given WINS’ integrated charity and retail model, ongoing growth plans, and periods of organizational change. The Manager, Finance & Accounting, will play a key role in maintaining financial stability, supporting strategic decision-making, and ensuring continuity of financial oversight during periods of change and growth.

The role requires sound professional judgment and the ability to provide financial leadership in complex and evolving environments. As WINS continues to grow and expand its impact, this position offers meaningful opportunities for professional growth, increased responsibility, and advancement within the organization.

Duties And Responsibilities
Accounting and Financial Management
  • Manage day-to-day accounting and financial operations.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with applicable Canadian accounting standards (ASNPO/Canadian GAAP).
  • Generate monthly budget variance reports for leadership, ensuring transparency and providing clear guidance on risks and priorities.
  • Work with the Senior Accountant in managing financial aspects of grants, including budget preparation, financial reporting, and compliance with grant requirements. Work closely with the Fund Development Team and Program Team to ensure effective use of funds and adherence to grant guidelines.
  • Act as back‑up for payroll processing, ensuring continuity, accuracy, and compliance, and provide oversight and escalation support to the Senior Accountant in preparing and processing scheduled payroll and other related duties.
Financial Planning and Analysis
  • In collaboration with the CFO, develop and maintain comprehensive financial models to support budgeting, forecasting, and long‑term financial planning.
  • Work with the CFO and the Senior Leadership Team to build annual budgets that reflect the agency’s key strategic goals and annual business plan. Provide monthly budget variance reports to each department head and discuss key priorities and risks.
  • Monitor cash flow and liquidity to ensure the organization’s financial stability. Provide strategic support to the Senior leadership in resource allocation across key priorities.
  • Regularly update financial forecasts that identify trends and key issues to support the leadership in making timely and informed strategic decisions.
  • Update and leverage pre-determined KPIs to analyze financial data, identify trends, and provide insights to support informed decision-making by the leadership team.
  • Develop multi‑year financial scenarios to assess sustainability, cash flow, and risk.
Audit, Risk and Compliance
  • Coordinate annual organizational and program audits and liaise with auditors to ensure timely completion of the audit process.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Ensure that statutory remittances, reporting and required filings are up to date including T3010, GST, T4, AGLC.
  • Provide support to the Senior Accountant to ensure that corporate licenses and registrations are up to date including Business License, property exemption renewal.
  • Work with the CFO to ensure that corporate insurance is properly structured and updated to mitigate risks.
Internal Control & IT Operations
  • Work with the CFO to ensure that strong internal controls are in place across the Business Support Team and finance operations, including updating policies and procedures as needed.
  • Actively participate in updating Risk Register and Enterprise Risk Management Plan.
  • Work with the Business Support Team and MSP (IT Managed Service Provider) in advancing WINS’ IT strategies and roadmap, including finance system improvements, integrations and process automation.
Leadership & Supervision
  • Provide direct supervision, coaching, and performance management for the Senior Accountant and Business Support Associate.
  • Support staff development, workload planning, and cross‑training to ensure operational resilience.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high‑performing Business Support Team.
Business Development Support
  • Provide strategic financial leadership to support sustainable growth, social enterprise initiatives, and mission‑aligned revenue development.
  • Evaluate new business development opportunities, capital‑intensive growth initiatives, programs, and partnerships by providing financial scenario analysis, including cash flow forecasts, and risk assessments in collaboration with the CFO and leadership.
  • Contribute financial insights to funding proposals, social enterprise initiatives, and growth planning.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensure that monthly strategic (operational) update is completed and shared with the Leadership Team and the Board of Directors as required.
  • Act as a key contributor to the Finance & Audit Committee by supporting the preparation of meeting materials and contributing to key discussions.
  • Actively participate in key leadership meetings and contribute to strategic planning.
  • Projects and tasks may be assigned that are related to the Business Support Division or that support broader organizational priorities.
  • Other related responsibilities as required.
Requirements
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Professional accounting designation or working towards a CPA designation.
Experience
  • Five to eight years of progressive accounting and financial experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing, coaching, or supervising staff, with at least 2‑3 years of management responsibility.
  • Experience with Sage 50 Accounting software and Power BI is considered an asset but not required.
  • Grant management experience is a definite asset.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience in Canadian payroll processing.
Personal/ Professional Attributes
  • Knowledge of charities, not‑for‑profit, and/or social enterprise industries is an asset.
  • Must clear Enhanced Criminal Record Check.
  • Eligible to work in Canada.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office Suite, and emerging technology including AI.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative, values‑driven, and dynamic team environment.
  • Proven diligence to protect and maintain critical confidential information.
  • Must have solid organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.

Working Conditions
  • In‑Office position based in Calgary with occasional travel to multiple local worksites.
