Overview

Position: Server (The Venue) | Location: Conestoga College – Doon Campus (may be eligible to work at other locations as needed) | Time Requirement: 10-15 hours/week; max 20. Some evenings and weekends may be required. Start Date: November 25, 2025. Reporting to: Food Services Supervisor. Hourly Wage: $20.65.

Position Overview

Servers are responsible for ensuring a positive and informed experience for guests while selling, serving, and describing food and beverages at The Venue Restaurant & Bar. In the course of this work, Servers will be required to use a cash register and other restaurant equipment. Occasionally, restocking and storing inventory will also be necessary.

In carrying out the duties of this position, a great deal of autonomy is exercised with final overview by the Food Services Supervisor. It is also important that Servers work extremely closely with the Food Services Supervisor to ensure that they are up to date on the basic overall operations of The Venue Restaurant & Bar. In all activities, it is crucial that Servers recognize that service to students and guests is a top priority.

You will learn to:

  • Prepare and present quality food and beverage for a variety of hospitality environments.
  • Practice effective interpersonal communication skills with customers and co-workers to create and maintain positive experiences and relationships.
  • Maintain a high standard of sanitation and safety in a food service establishment.
  • Respond to issues and dilemmas arising in the delivery of hospitality services, products and guest experiences by using and promoting ethical behavior and best practices.
Responsibilities and Duties

General

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the products and pricing of the Venue’s food, beverages, and specials.
  • Take orders and serve guests in accordance with CSSI’s guidelines for excellent customer service.
  • Serve alcoholic beverages responsibly to guests by first ensuring that they have proper identification and have not exceeded the in-house drink limit.
  • Operate cash register to accept various types of tender, provide proper change, balance cash drawer and receipts, and document discrepancies.
  • Count and handle cash with accuracy. Count till before every shift to ensure correct starting float amount.
  • Track inventory and restock food items as needed to meet demand and minimize waste.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and sanitize work areas and frequently touched surfaces before and after every use.
  • Work as a team with fellow Food Services staff. Assist with setup, execution, and teardown of catering events as needed.

Other General Duties

  • Work in accordance with corporate by-laws, policies and procedures, particularly the CSSI Mission Statement.
  • Practice professionalism and impartiality when handling sensitive personal information and maintain confidentiality for business practices.
  • Adhere to Health & Safety laws, policies, and procedures; follow CSSI’s work attire standards.
  • Work in an organized manner where detail, accuracy, and confidentiality are critical.
  • Attend meetings and committees when required; build relationships between CSSI and Conestoga College.
  • Mandatory attendance at monthly staff meetings and CSSI-related training days; other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions

Physical Demands

This position may involve long periods of standing and walking. Lifting up to 50 lbs may be required from time to time.

Environmental Conditions

Work is primarily in an enclosed food preparation area with frequent interruptions and changing priorities. Work near hazardous kitchen equipment, including a cooking range and sharp objects. Some work may be required after regular hours and on weekends.

Sensory Demands

Long periods of work in a warm and busy environment may be required.

Mental Demands

Maintain a consistent sense of urgency while handling multiple priorities within short timeframes; interacts with a wide variety of people and issues.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Must be available to work up to 20 hours per week on days, evenings, and weekends as required.
  • Must have and show proof of Smart Serve Certification.
  • Must be 19 years of age or older.

Candidate Attributes

  • Deep understanding of best practices in cooking and food preparation, CSSI’s food services, and related procedures.
  • Understanding of AODA and Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario requirements.
  • Highly organized with strong time management; customer service skills; cultural competence.
Student Eligibility

All students in this position must:

  • Be in a full-time degree, diploma or certificate program at Conestoga College.
  • Maintain a full-time course load. Part-time studies may be allowed for students registered with Accessibility Services and requiring a reduced load.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number.

International students must also:

  • Hold a valid Canadian study permit that allows on-campus employment and adhere to all permit requirements.
