Purpose Statement

The Kitchen Helper supports the Mission, Vision, and Values of The Salvation Army. He/She will be actively engaged in supporting the cooks in the feeding program at the Halifax Centre of Hope.

Job Summary

The Kitchen Helper is responsible for performing various cleaning, maintenance, preparation and stocking duties in the Kitchen and dining room. Duties include washing dishes, assisting cooks with meal ingredients, retrieving ingredients from the refrigerator, freezer and stockroom, measuring ingredients as directed, removing leftovers, and ensuring work areas are properly sanitized.

Responsibilities (Position Objectives)
  • Work with pride to maintain a safe, healthy workplace.
  • Check daily that appliances and equipment are operating correctly.
  • Keep the kitchen and dining rooms clean and tidy.
  • Wipe dining room tables, staff lunchroom counters.
  • Assist cooks in meal preparation and serving.
  • Clear dinner trays and process through the dishwasher; clean, wash and sanitize pots and pans.
  • Sweep and wash kitchen floors regularly.
  • Sterilize buckets in the dishwashing area at least twice per week.
  • Wash mops weekly in a Javex solution and dry properly.
  • Assist the cook on duty with duties such as preparing meal ingredients.
  • Wash and peel fruit and vegetables as required.
  • Clear dining area and wash dishes after breaks.
  • Ensure garbage and recycling are removed daily.
  • Assist in sorting donations and organizing storage areas.
  • Assist in cleaning and organizing walk-in refrigerators or freezers with stock rotation.
  • Keep staff office and bathroom clean and tidy.
  • Present oneself professionally in personal hygiene and grooming.
  • Attend staff meetings as required, including kitchen staff meetings.
  • Support outside BBQ or luncheon events for clients at least 3 times per year.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Education (Qualifications)
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Training in Crisis Intervention, First Aid, Team Building, WHMIS, and Food Handler’s Course.
  • Able to take directions and work independently.
  • Proven experience in kitchen settings.
  • Good knowledge of the Canada Food Guide.
  • Operation of a dishwasher.
  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs.
Working Conditions
  • Occasional exposure to angry or abusive individuals, verbal abuse, and exposure to drugs and alcohol.
  • Required to use and secure sharp instruments.
  • Potential for minor burns and cuts.
  • Potential for slippery floors; slip-resistant footwear required.
  • Uniform provided and required on the job.
  • Standard Workplace Safety practices must be observed.
  • Exposure to washing and sanitizing chemicals.
  • Job requires significant periods of standing and walking.
Conditions of Employment
  • Schedule may vary; some weekend and evening work may be required.
  • Able to stand for extended periods and use kitchen equipment and appliances.
  • Sound knowledge of food safety standards and procedures.
  • This is a Casual position.
  • A Criminal Background Check satisfactory to The Salvation Army may be required.
  • Normal hours of work are 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
  • 2 paid fifteen-minute breaks and one half-hour unpaid lunch break.
  • Normal location of work is The Salvation Army Halifax Centre of Hope, 2044 Gottingen Street, Halifax, NS.
Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $17.11 to $21.38 with a maximum of $25.66. Placement in the salary range will be based on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
