JUNIOR MECHANICAL DESIGNER

Reports To: Production Manager

Location: Collingwood, ON

Job Type: Full-time permanent

SUMMARY: The Junior Mechanical Designer supports mechanical design work, drafting, and documentation for the Assembly Business Unit. This entry-level role works under the guidance of the Senior Designer to create and update SolidWorks drawings, prepare manufacturing documentation, support fixture development, and ensure design information is consistent and accurate, ensuring production consistency for volume manufacturing. This position is ideal for a technically inclined individual beginning their design career and seeking hands‑on exposure to mechanical design, manufacturing processes, and prototype development.

RESPONSIBILITIES
CAD Modeling & Drafting
  • Create or update 2D drawings, simple 3D models, and assemblies in SolidWorks.
  • Apply dimensioning, tolerancing, and fabrication notes under supervision.
  • Prepare detailed manufacturing drawings for machinists and suppliers.
  • Maintain drawing accuracy, clarity, and revision control.
Support for Fixture and Tooling Design
  • Assist in drafting fixture and tooling concepts designed by the Senior Designer.
  • Prepare drawings, exploded views, and assembly details for tooling builds.
  • Participate in design reviews, incorporating feedback into design updates.
Product Documentation & BOM Management
  • Support creation and maintenance of bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Update engineering documentation packages, including drawing sets and model revisions.
  • Assist with engineering change orders (ECOs) and revision control.
Prototype & Production Support
  • Assist during prototype builds by taking measurements, verifying fit, and documenting issues.
  • Capture photos, notes, and dimensional checks during assembly trials to create Visual Work Instructions (VWIs) and Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) based on processes defined by the Senior Designer.
Data Management & Compliance
  • Maintain proper revision control and file management practices.
  • Follow ISO 9001 requirements for document handling and engineering changes.
  • Ensure consistency across drawing packages and model libraries.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • College diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, CAD/Drafting, Product Design, or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering is considered an asset
Experience
  • Mechanical design or drafting experience (co‑op experience acceptable).
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or comparable CAD software.
  • Exposure to machining, fabrication, or assembly environments preferred.
Skills
  • Proficiency with 3D modeling and 2D drafting.
  • Understanding of GD&T fundamentals.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Strong computer skills (CAD, Excel, documentation systems).
  • Awareness of basic manufacturing processes (machining, assembly, materials).
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Eagerness to learn, take direction, and grow technical skillset.
  • Good communication skills and ability to collaborate with diverse teams.
  • Positive, proactive attitude with willingness to take on new challenges.
  • SolidWorks certification (CSWA or CSWP).
  • Experience with CNC machine shops or basic machining coursework.
  • Experience writing or interpreting simple work instructions.
  • Exposure to electromechanical assemblies or sensors.
