As a 100% employee-owned and operated firm, with over 1,400 staff members in 31 locations, we are proud to offer qualified staff with shareholding options in our company. At McElhanney, we work in teams to build strong connections with our staff, clients, and local communities. Our employees enjoy working here because of our varied projects, high levels of autonomy, opportunities for career development, excellent total compensation and benefits package, and collaborating with a team of great professionals.

The Opportunity

McElhanney is looking for a Junior Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Technologist to join our Calgary team and support transportation infrastructure projects across Western Canada. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and designers on a mix of urban and rural projects, including road improvements, bridges, and culvert replacements. You may also support municipal and energy/resource projects, giving you exposure to a wide range of work early in your career.

This role is a great fit if you enjoy turning ideas into drawings, learning how projects come together, and growing your technical skills in a supportive, team-oriented environment. You’ll be encouraged to ask questions, build confidence, and take on more responsibility as you develop.

We value collaboration, curiosity, and steady growth. At McElhanney, you’ll find opportunities to learn through hands-on project work, mentoring, and both internal and external training.

What You’ll Do

  • Support contract administration for Parks Canada Agency (PCA) infrastructure projects, including coordination with contractors, inspectors, and internal project teams
  • Assist with the preparation of technical reports, memoranda, and project documentation for condition assessments, construction, and asset management programs
  • Conduct and document visual pavement inspections and field assessments, with guidance from senior staff
  • Help develop construction cost estimates, quantity take-offs, and tender packages, including contract specifications and supporting documents
  • Participate in construction inspections and field reviews to support quality control, safety, and compliance with project requirements
  • Assist with survey coordination, materials testing, and the collection of field data as required
  • Review and track contractor submittals, including traffic management plans, schedules, and shop drawings, for completeness and compliance
  • Support utility coordination and stakeholder communication to help resolve conflicts and maintain project schedules
  • Learn and apply PCA, municipal, and provincial standards, specifications, and best practices under the mentorship of experienced engineers and technologists

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Project Management Technology, or similar programs from an accredited institution
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D; exposure to InfraWorks, GIS, or other CAD/mapping tools is an asset
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with Project or similar scheduling tools is a bonus
  • Familiarity with Alberta Transportation, City of Calgary, or other municipal standards is an asset
  • Registered or eligible to register as:
    • an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with APEGA, or
    • a Technician or Technologist with ASET
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear technical documentation and interact professionally with contractors and clients
  • Comfortable working in both office and field environments, including construction sites and outdoor settings
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and time-management skills
  • A positive, team-oriented mindset with a genuine willingness to learn and grow under the mentorship of senior engineers and technologists
