The Opportunity: Our Power subsector, a key component of WSP's ERI (Energy, Resources and Industry) sector, supports clients from coast to coast. We have developed a comprehensive range of services including technical study preparation in niche areas, project management, detailed design, and site services. WSP is seeking an Intermediate Substation Engineer to join our Power Delivery team, located in our BC offices (Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, Prince George, Kelowna or Kamloops).

The ideal candidate possesses strong technical expertise and consulting experience in T&D projects—specifically substations. This role involves collaborating with clients and stakeholders to understand engineering needs, ensuring successful project coordination, and delivering projects on time and within budget while maintaining quality and safety. What you can expect to do here:
  • You will take technical ownership of all design aspects for high voltage (69kV - 500kV) substation projects, including development of:
    • General Arrangements, Plan Views and Elevation Views, Grounding Plans, Cable Trough/Conduit Plans, Specifications for Major Primary Equipment (transformers, breakers, switches, etc.), Documentation for Design Calculations, Bill of Materials, Construction Sequencing Documentation
    • Conduct studies: Grounding, Lightning, AC and DC calculations for Station Service and Battery System Sizing, Bus Fault Stress Analysis
  • You will provide Technical, Procurement, Construction and Active Coordination support
  • You will coordinate with internal and external project team members, with familiarity identifying coordination needs with transmission line engineers, distribution line engineers, civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, and surveyors
  • You will identify key client interests and drivers and determine key clients in some instances
  • You will act as a technical specialist for system protection and communication, providing consultation and guidance to project teams
  • You will maintain good working relationships with internal groups, material suppliers, contractors, and others affecting quality, schedule, and cost
  • You will perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs
  • You will guide and mentor junior engineers
What you\'ll bring to WSP:
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Registration as a P.Eng in your province of residence
  • Minimum of 5+ years of relevant post-education experience in power systems substation electrical engineering, familiarity with protection and control, telecom
  • Experience with all voltages 500 kV and below
  • Proficient with engineering design tools and software (e.g. ETAP, Aspen OneLiner, EasyPower, PSCAD, PSS/E, etc.)
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities
  • Strong knowledge of electrical distribution and transmission systems with deep understanding of industry standards and regulations
  • Familiarity with safety standards, utility codes, and regulatory requirements
  • Excellent communication, presentation, organizational and writing skills; candidates will interface with clients and prepare project design documents including technical design, plan & profile, staking sheets, contracts and specifications
  • Willingness to travel as needed for project assessments, meetings and on-site support
Compensation

Salary range (in British Columbia): $91,200 - $125,400

The final salary may vary based on factors including education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, and business needs. The salary range may change for business purposes.
