Job description

Paterson & Cooke Canada Inc. is seeking an Intermediate Pipelines Engineer to join our North American Pipelines Group. The pipelines group currently operates out of Golden, Colorado and western Canada. We are looking for an energetic and technically sound individual to bolster and grow the team’s presence from our Sudbury office. The successful candidate will have over 10 years of experience in the design, analysis, and implementation of slurry and water pipeline systems for mining and mineral processing applications. This role is ideal for an engineer who is technically skilled and passionate about advancing the performance and reliability of slurry and water pipeline systems in the mining industry.

This is a full-time position based in Sudbury, Ontario, with opportunities for travel to mine sites and other Paterson & Cooke offices, as required. Most of our pipelines team resides in Golden, Colorado, so there is an expectation that the successful candidate will travel from time-to-time to interact and build lasting relationships with the team in Golden and western Canada. The ideal candidate will possess an entrepreneurial spirit and be driven to capture more of the Canadian pipelines market share such that we can expand the team’s opportunities and capabilities from the Sudbury office, as such we are not entertaining remote work for this position.

The design of long-distance slurry and pipelines represents a core competency for Paterson & Cooke — and few companies can rival our experience and expertise in this space. Maintaining and expanding this expertise requires continuous technical development, innovation, and mentorship. Our engineers are trained to apply sound engineering principles while pushing the boundaries of design efficiency, system performance, and operational reliability.

Tasks
  • Perform engineering design and analysis at various project levels (i.e., PFS, FS, detailed) of slurry, water, and concentrate transport systems.
  • Develop and review hydraulic models, process flow diagrams, piping & instrumentation diagrams, and pipeline sizing calculations.
  • Prepare design reports, specifications, and drawings, and cost estimates for pipeline systems and pump stations.
  • Support the development of cost estimates by preparing detailed material quantity estimates, take-offs, and equipment sizing
  • Support implementation, commissioning, and operational troubleshooting for new and existing systems.
  • Conduct field investigations and reviews, including data collection and system performance assessments.
  • Perform steady-state and transient (surge) analyses for slurry and water pipeline systems.
  • Contribute to research and development activities aimed at improving pipeline design tools and methodologies.
  • Lead the preparation of proposals, reports, and technical presentations for clients and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers, designers, and laboratory teams to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Participate in training and mentorship initiatives, both as a learner and as a contributor to group development.
Responsibilities
  • Take ownership of assigned projects and ensure deliverables meet Paterson & Cooke’s high standards of technical quality and accuracy.
  • Provide technical leadership on pipeline design, hydraulic analysis, and system integration within project teams.
  • Mentor junior engineers in pipeline design principles, modeling, and best practices.
  • Ensure that all work complies with internal safety, quality, and operational procedures.
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends, new technologies, and relevant standards affecting pipeline design and operation.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with clients through responsive communication and professional integrity.
  • Actively contribute to the continuous improvement of design tools, templates, and procedures within the Pipelines Group.
  • Support the development of innovative design solutions and participate in internal knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Represent Paterson & Cooke in professional forums, conferences, or technical collaborations, as appropriate.
  • Promote teamwork and uphold the company’s values of safety, technical excellence, and innovation.
Minimum Requirements and Competencies
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Mining Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in the design and operation of slurry, water, or concentrate pipeline systems.
  • Proven experience in hydraulic modeling, equipment selection, and system optimization.
  • Strong understanding of pipeline materials, fittings, and instrumentation & controls.
  • Experience with transient flow (surge) analysis and associated modeling tools is a strong asset.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario or another provincial association.
  • Valid driver’s license and passport; ability to travel domestically and internationally.
